Ancient Well Uncovered In Lubavitch
An ancient well was recently discovered in Lubavitch, buried at a depth of over seven meters.
The well was used for drinking water and extinguishing fires during the time of the Rebbe Maharash. On the eve of Passover, the Rebbe Maharash himself lowered a bucket into the well, drawing water with the help of his close Hasidim. The next day, while reciting the Galil, the Rebbe Maharash kneaded the dough by hand and passed it on to women to roll out for the baking of “preserved matzah” with great luxury.
A small pump was also used in the well, which the Rebbe Maharash bought in Kiev for fire extinguishing. The residents of Lubavitch referred to it as the “iron witch.” However, during Soviet times, the well was buried.
In 1994, the 7th Lubavitch Rebbe, Menachem Mendel Schneerson, instructed and blessed Rabbi Nathan (Nusi) Gurary to restore all the buildings of the Rebbe’s Court in Lubavitch. Under the guidance of Rabbi Gavriel Gordon, the person responsible for preserving the holy places of the village of Lubavitch, the well was discovered in 2021.
The well has become the main landmark for the restoration of the House of the 5th and 6th Lubavitch Rebbe, though it still awaits reconstruction.
Interested benefactors are invited to participate in the restoration of this historic well and the entire Rebbe’s Court.
