Leaders of the Portuguese Jewish community were joined by rabbis from Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom and Israel last week at the headquarters of B’nai B’rith Portugal as a human-rights organization honored the leadership and legacy of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory.

The Portugal-based International Observatory of Human Rights (Observatório Internacional de Direitos Humanos) cited the Rebbe’s “profound impact on promoting education, human rights and fostering friendship among people.”

Luís Andrade, the group’s president, noted that the Rebbe’s ongoing influence goes beyond religious boundaries. “He has become a symbol of goodness for humanity, contributing to the creation of a more just and fraternal world. His legacy continues to inspire new generations, and his merits are recognized globally.”

Gabriela Cantergi, president of B’nai B’rith International Portugal, highlighted the Rebbe’s influence in promoting basic moral norms for both Jews and non-Jews. She pointed out that each year in the United States, the Rebbe’s birthday is proclaimed “Education and Sharing Day,” which she called “a fitting annual tribute” to the Rebbe’s influence.

Rabbi Eli Rosenfeld, director of Chabad-Lubavitch of Portugal was presented with a certificate at the ceremony and will forward it to Chabad World Headquarters in New York.
