BDE: Rabbi Shalom Ber Butman, 88, OBM

With great sadness we report the passing of Rabbi Shalom Ber Butman OBM, the Shliach to Nachalat Binyamin in Tel Aviv. He passed away on Friday, the 10th of Av, 5783.

He was 88 years old.

Born in Moscow on the 12th of Elul 5694 (1934), he was the son of Shneur Zalman and Yehudis Butman. Shalom Ber escaped the Soviet Union as a young man along with many other Chasidim and lived for a period in Paris, France, where he assisted the Rebbe/s Mother, Rebbetzin Chana.

As a Bochur Shalom Ber spent years in Eretz Yisroel and England on Shlichus before marrying his wife Devorah in 1957 and settling in Crown Heights for multiple years.

In 1968 he moved to Tel Aviv where he took up the mantle as leader of the “Merkaz Chabad” Shul on Nahalat Binyamin Street.

He is survived by his children; Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Butman (Lod, Israel), Rabbi Eliezer Yochanan Butman (Chadera, Israel), Rabbi Yehuda Butman (Ramat Hasharon, Israel), and Mrs. Michla Segal (Crown Heights).

He is also survived by his siblings; Rabbi Shmuel Butman, Mrs. Leah Kahn, and Mrs. Miriam Swerdlov.

He was predeceased by his wife Devorah earlier this year, and his son Rabbi Boruch Butman OBM in 2014

The Levaya took place in Eretz Yisroel today.
