Ohr Avner Schools in Queens Leave Lasting Impression on Israeli Minister
Since the formation of the 37th Israeli government (Prime Minister Netanyahu’s sixth) on Hei Teves this past year, a tradition has taken root among ministers and officials: They open their visits to the United States by paying a visit to the Rebbe’s Ohel in Queens, where they pray for the success of their mission.
Recently, Minister May Flora Golan-Badra from the Ministry for the Advancement of Women’s Status, made the pilgrimage to the Rebbe’s Ohel, accompanied by Mrs. Chagit Sofiev, the daughter of philanthropist Mr. Levi Leviev, and her husband, Mr. Gavriel Sofiev. Also joining the group was Shliach Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Wolowik, the Deputy Director of the Ohr Avner Educational Institutions in Queens.
Following a heartfelt prayer at the Rebbe’s Ohel, Minister May Golan embarked on an inspiring visit to the renowned Ohr-Avner Chabad educational empire in Queens – the largest borough in New York City.
As someone who grew up in a traditional and religious household in an impoverished neighborhood, the minister was deeply moved to witness the exceptional education provided to thousands of students who flock to these institutions daily. With open arms, the students are embraced and given the opportunity to delve into their Jewish heritage and identity while also receiving invaluable tools for success in both their material and spiritual lives.
During her visit, the minister was given a comprehensive overview of the educational system’s many offerings, which include kindergartens, day-care centers, elementary schools, high schools, summer and winter camps, Sunday programs, and evening programs for public school students. She was also shown the recent success of the newly opened school for special needs. The principles of each department proudly showcased the impressive accomplishments of their students, leaving the minister deeply impressed.
The minister also had the opportunity to address the students of Or Chanah High School with kind and inspiring words, affirming the tremendous value of their education and encouraging them to continue striving for excellence.
