Lubavitch Artist Takes Up Elul Challenge In Preparation For Rosh Hashana
by CrownHeights.info
Lubavitch artists Yitzchak Moully is known for his colorful murals, creative art, and now most recently his Elul art challenge.
“During the month of Elul in preparation for Rosh Hashanah and the High Holidays we blow the shofar to awaken our soul,” Moully wrote on his social media. “Each day of Elul that we blow Shofar, I am challenging myself to create a unique, original Shofar painting.”
In conversation with CrownHeights.info, Moully expressed his drive for the project.
“I wanted to do something special for myself as a way of doing the Avoda of Elul,” he said. “Each day’s shofar blowing is a unique step in the months work towards Rosh Hashana. So each day a new shofar blowing, each day a unique shofar painting.”
For Moully, the challenge itself has a personal precedent. Each year, after Chatzos on the day of Rosh Hashana, Moully pours his heart and soul into a Shofar painting, attempting to visualize the new energy of the upcoming year.
Just a few days into his personal challenge, Moully has already shown his unique style, blending color and creative art in a distinctly “Moully” work.
Moully’s first painting, marked Aleph Elul, depicts a shofar at the bottom corner of the canvas, with colorful paint drops emanating outwards towards the heavens. His third takes a different direction, with two Shofars together rising and intertwining their colorful ribbons as they reach for the sky.
The challenge, while begun as a personal one, is open to anyone looking to connect to the shofar through artwork. Moully asked other artist to “Join me on this journey” encouraging others to find their expression through what art is meaningful for them.
“It’s not just for visual artists,” emphasized Moully, “it’s for anyone to express their Elul/shofar expression in anyway they choose.”
