A Moment of Silence is coming to Arizona Pulic Schools.

Jewish Arizona legislator Alma Hernandez sponsored the Bill earlier this year in honor of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, and is now celebrating as is passed.

“Excited to announce that 2 of my bills heard in the Ed committee today just passed,” she wrote on Twitter. “HB2707 in honor of the #rebbe & my SRO training bill HB2820.”

Bill HB2707 amends the requirement for schools to say pledge of allegiance, adding that Kindergartens through Twelvth Graders would also have at least one minute at the beginning of the school day dedicated to a moment of silence.

“A teacher or other school employee may not suggest the nature of any reflection in which a student may engage during the moment of silence,” the amendment says. Instead, teachers should “encourage parents of students in the class to discuss with their children how to best use the moment of silence.”

The campaign for students to hold a Moment of Silence was pressed by the Rebbe as early as 1983, and with the help of Shluchim worldwide, has gained increased traction over recent years.

In April of 2021, Florida’s legislature adopted a bill which required a moment of silence at the start of each day, and in February of 2020, a similar bill was introduced to the New York City Council.
