Miami, FL — There is a little known fact to many Miami Gardens residents. The City is home to one of the largest Jewish schools in South Florida with almost 800 students; the Lubavitch Educational Center. The Lubavitch Educational Center provides an elementary school program for grades one to six and accommodates a diverse enrollment with exposure to a broad curriculum of Jewish studies.
Councilman André Williams was introduced to Rabbi Korf, the school administrator in 2003 and has met the students, school administrators, toured the campus and joined them at their annual school celebration. The students from the school will join the City and the Miami Gardens Jaycees in a community clean up of NW 7th Avenue between NW 185th Drive and NW 175th Street in the upcoming school year.
“It is so important that this City embrace different cultures and religions. If we are to become a world class city, we have to welcome these groups and provide them good service and hospitality; these individuals will in turn become the City’s ambassadors to the rest of South Florida and the world, ” says Councilman Williams.
Councilman Williams has a much deeper understanding of the Jewish community. He also recently returned from a trip to Israel sponsored by a Jewish non-profit organization which included a week-long program of discussions with Israeli and U.S. government officials, members of the Knesset (the Israeli parliament), academicians, military officials and Palestinian representatives. The voyage also granted the Councilman an opportunity to tour holy sites in Jerusalem, visit an immigration absorption center, and meet with Israeli social service providers.
“André is a leader who is genuinely interested in the welfare of others. He has made many new friends at the Lubavitch School in a very short time because he cares” said Rabbi Benjy Korf.
Councilman Williams, as does each and every member of the City Council, seeks to foster partnerships between the City and the various schools and organizations in the community; however it takes mutual effort. The Mayor and Council urges local schools, civic and non-profit organizations to participate in council meetings, city activities and events and/or advisory boards, where they can make a difference and make the community a better place. The City of Miami Gardens was incorporated on May 13, 2003, as the 33rd city in Miami-Dade County. At a population of 107,569, it is the third largest city in Miami-Dade County
