Crown Heights Hatzalah Advances Care of Chile Hatzalah With Cardiac Monitor Donation
by CrownHeights.info
It all began with a favor, and ended as a life saving gift of three Cardiac monitors.
In 2018, Crown Heights Hatzalah made a major push to upgrade their Advanced Medical Care, purchasing new Cardiac monitors for their volunteer Paramedics. At approximately $30,000 each, the investment totaled well over a quarter Million Dollars, and set the stage for a favor that would ultimately provide Chile Hatzalah with their own Cardiac monitors.
The newly purchased Cardiac monitors replaced a series of durable and good condition old ones that were quickly becoming outdated. With an impending government requirement that would make the old monitors unusable in the United States, Crown Heights decided to make the upgrade.
Que in Flatbush Hatzalah, which had seen an explosion of growth and found themselves in need of a few more monitors to equip their Paramedics. It was a match made in heaven, and Crown Heights Hatzalah lent Flatbush Hatzalah three of their older, but good condition monitors until the new ones ordered by Flatbush arrived for use.
By July of 2021, Flatbush was nearing the arrival of their new monitors, and the excitement was palpable.
Around the same time, a question posed on a Worldwide Hatzalah chat came to the attention of one Flatbush Hatzalah Paramedic.
“Hi Everyone, If any Hatzalah have a EKG monitor/defibrillator that they are willing to donate to Hatzalah Chile, please let me know.”
The message was forwarded to Crown Heights Hatzalah, with the possibility that these monitors, which would no longer be usable in the United States, might be donated to Hatzalah of Chile.
Fast forward four months, and a logistical operation went underway to transport these expensive pieces of equipment across continents.
Beginning in Flatbush, a group of Rockaway Lawrence Hatzalah volunteers picked up three refurbished Cardiac monitors, transporting them to Long Island, where they met the the next leg of their journey, Hatzalah Air.
Airlifted from Long Island, the three pieces of equipment were flown in style to Florida, where they were packaged onto a ship for transport to Chile.
The coordination of this entire process, including the logistical operation to transport the three lifesaving monitors to Chile was incredible. It demonstrates the deep love and Achdus that spanned two continents, four Hatzalah organizations, and multiple individuals with one goal in mind, united to help save lives.
The mitzvah afforded by this donation spreads even further, including the members of the Crown Heights and other Jewish communities that made this donation possible.
