New Shluchim For Youth in Rego Park, Queens
by CrownHeights.info
Rabbi Yaakov Horvitz and his wife Breina (nee Borenstein), will be moving out on Shlichus to Rego Park, Queens to join Shliach Rabbi Eliyahu Blokh and assist in youth activities.
“As a bochur I did Release Time in Rego Park,” Rabbi Yaakov Horvitz told CrownHeights.info, “and once my elementary school kids graduated, I felt the need to continue making programs with them. bihashgacha protis the shliach in the area, Rabbi Eli Blokh was looking for someone to open a program for middle and high school kids.”
Looking back, Rabbi and Mrs. Horvitz’s path to Shlichus in Rego Park looks almost pre-ordained.
Born in Miami, Florida, Yaakov Horvitz worked with the youth in Rego Park for many years while he was still single, and brought his wife Breina, originally from Bologna, Italy on board after being married.
“I continued the programs periodically after I got married,” said Rabbi Horvitz, “like on summer vacations and all while I looked for shlichus in other places.”
Having spent time doing shlichus work in places including kazakhstan, japan, and different cities and states in the US, they decided that maybe it was time to come home to New York City, where they took up a full time position under Rabbi Blokh and Chabad of Rego Park.
Since their beginnings in Queens, the Horvitz family has began running programs for middle school and high school kids – proudly separate programs for boys and girls, and hebrew school – and run a mass mivtza mezuza with fifty bochurim doing merkaz shlichus in the surrounding neighborhoods of Queens.
“Really, the secret to success is working together with release time bochurim,” Rabbi Horvitz said.
