The 20th Annual Kinus to Address the Challenges of Mechanchim
The world of Chabad chinuch continues to grow and develop, mosdos expend and new mosdos are opening. That’s all-good news. Perhaps it is as a result of the continuous expansion and notwithstanding new creative ideas and stronger standards, the challenges in Chabad society are many and reflected in our mosdos and the chinuch leadership is certainly not oblivious to them.
The 20th annual kinus will focus on what it takes for a mechanech to be to maximize his success. Of course, he must have the skills and the knowledge, the temperament and the desire to fulfill his shlichus of being mechanech the next generation of the Rebbe’s Chassidim. He must never lose sight of his objectives or his awesome responsibility, he must be patient and encouraging, he must be understanding and demanding with each child according to his abilities. That’s a tall order.
A number of outstanding mechanchim will address the Kinus, each discussing an area of his expertise.
The Rebbe spoke many times of קבלת עול as a primary objective of חינוך, Given the prevalent social atmosphere, how is this achieved in practical terms? Clearly it is not just a matter of teaching Torah and expecting a child to vicariously learn Kabolas Ol and Yiras Shamayim.
Rabbi Nosson Gourarie has directed a school for many years in Buffalo NY and was mekarev many to Yiddishkeit and has been speaking on the subject of Kabolas Ol and Yiras Shamayim for decades.
Rabbi Menachem M. Blau has assumed the position of menahel Klali of Oholei Torah recently. He is a mechanech par-excellence who was responsible for the renaissance of the Lubavitcher Mesivta in the Chovavei Torah campus. He will speak on the subject as well.
It has been said that the most important attribute an elementary school can develop in a student is a love for learning.
In a yeshiva that would translate to developing אהבת התורה in our talmidim. We strive to make them life-long learners, each talmid according to his abilities and talents, but all that is predicated on his appreciating the fact that he learning תורת השם . Rabbi Chaim Schapiro the menahel of Yeshiva Tomchei Tmimim of Morristown will address the subject.
Rabbi Hershel Fried will discuss the raging chinuch debate whether a child should be required to do what’s right “because it’s right” or whether he may be encouraged to do what’s right “because it pays”. He will introduce some clarity to this area; addressing what seem to be divergent opinions of Chazal. For example: אַל תִּהְיוּ כַעֲבָדִים הַמְשַׁמְּשִׁין אֶת הָרַב עַל מְנָת לְקַבֵּל פְּרָס, vs. לעולם ילמד אדם שלא לשמה שמתוך שלא לשמה בא לשמה vs. הלומד שלא לשמה נוח לו שלא נברא. Mechanchim deal with this daily and everyone attempts to strike a balance, how is this done?
These are among the many topics which will be deal with duing the course of two learning filled days where mechanchim breath and internalize chinuch ideas which will help them set the none for the new school year.
