Crown Heights Laundromat Fire Displaced Multiple Lubavitch Families

The laundromat at the corner of Schenectady Ave and Union Streets went up in flames over Shabbos, displacing four Lubavitch families and leaving their possessions destroyed.

The fire was reported around 1:20pm Shabbos afternoon, with the flames burning up into the upstairs apartments.

Firefighters responded as families fled the building, leaving all their possessions behind at the mercy of the two alarm blaze. After the firefighters put out the fire, little remained of the apartments.

According to a neighbor, the fire left such extensive damage that even neighboring homes were uninhabitable due to stench of smoke.

The building, owned by Crown Heights real estate developer David Fischer, was insured according to a report, but the coverage only extended to the building itself and the common areas, not what was inside the apartments.

Without renters insurance, one of the families started an online fundraising campaign to help them get back on their feet.
