Rabbi Yitzchok Dovid Groner, the chief rabbi of Melbourne’s Chabad-Lubavitch movement, has been moved out of intensive care following an emergency operation on Friday morning.

The 82-year-old Chabad emissary, who has been stricken by ill health of late, had fluid on his lungs.

The Chabad movement sent out mass emails on Thursday asking its members to say Tehillim (psalms) for Rabbi Groner’s wellbeing (Yitzchok Dovid Ben Menucha Rochel) a sign his situation was critical.

His second home, the Yeshivah Centre in Melbourne’s Hotham Street, which he helped build, has put a link on its website updating its members on Rabbi Groner’s condition.

The US-born rabbi was sent here as a shaliach of the Lubaitcher Rebbe in 1958. Since then he has helped build the Lubavitch movement in Melbourne, which now boasts two schools, and a myriad of Chabad houses and ancillary institutions.
