Have. Hold. Cherish. The Jewish Secret to Lasting Love

What ancient secret lies at the heart of Jewish marital life that has sustained, nourished, synergized, and sanctified love and desire?

At a farbrengen on Yud Daled (14) Kislev, 1953, marking his 25th wedding anniversary, the Rebbe said, “This is the day that bound me to you, and you to me.”

On this day, Chabad Chasidim worldwide join in commemoration and celebration of the Rebbe and Rebbetzin’s anniversary. In honor of this momentous occasion, the Rosh Chodesh Society (RCS)—the women’s division of the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI)—launches a special mini-course, Have. Hold. Cherish. The Jewish Secret to Lasting Love.

We are deeply thankful and owe a debt of gratitude to our dear friends and sponsors, Rabbi Schneur Zalman and Mimi Fellig and family, of Miami Beach, Florida, for making this possible. We join with all those who have been and will continue to be impacted by their kindness in wishing them the true fulfillment of all their hearts’ desires.

Marriage is the most powerful relationship there is, not just because marriage is a universal human ideal and not just because it is the foundation of the family unit, but also because marriage is a union of two as-yet-incomplete souls. Indeed, marriage is much deeper, much more meaningful, and much more important than most of us understand. And the key to this sacred institution is G-d’s gift to every Jewish couple: the blessing of family purity.

This three-lesson offering draws upon millennia of Jewish wisdom, from the mystical to the down-to-earth, allowing men and women of all ages and walks of life to explore the intricacies of love and marriage from a Jewish perspective. The cosmic root of love, Judaism’s view of intimacy, and the synergy and sanctity of love and desire will all be addressed in these classes, giving each participant a heartfelt, deep appreciation for the profound impact that the mitzvah of taharat hamishpachah can have on the life of a Jewish couple—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Whether students are currently married, engaged, considering someday tying the knot, or simply seeking to better understand the spiritual root of lasting love and marriage, Have. Hold. Cherish. will forever change how they think about the most important relationship in life, in all its beauty and complexity.

“This series has created an environment for elevated discussion on the most pressing issues facing young adults in today’s dating world,” shared Rabbi Eli Block, director, Chabad Young Professionals, Chabad at Legacy West, in Plano, Texas. “Students were moved to discover that the Torah has something meaningful to say about modern relationships.”

“From the bottom of our hearts, we want to thank you for creating this series. To be able to offer our young professionals such true, solid guidance on what is, or will be, the most important part of their lives—their marriages—is an invaluable gift,” noted Rabbi Yaya and Mrs. Devora Wilhelm, codirectors, Chabad Young Professionals of the Upper East Side, in New York City. “We hope every shliach and shluchah out there will consider sharing Have. Hold. Cherish. with each and every Jew they encounter. It will change their lives.”

“Today, the timeless teachings of our 3000-year-old tradition on love and marriage are more relevant than ever,” says RCS Director Shaindy Jacobson. “This mini-course challenges us to think deeply about ourselves and our relationships and gives us practical tools to enhance them. It allows us to see marriage in a whole new light and experience it with new meaning. In essence, it infuses the Rebbe’s words, ‘This is the day that bound me to you, and you to me’ with renewed meaning.”
