Shloshim for Professor Liviu Librescu

Riverside, CA — Since the National Committee for Furtherance of Jewish Education (NCFJE) announced the sponsorship of the Dr. Liviu Librescu Memorial Lecture Series on April 18th, thirty Chabad campus Rabbis have received grants to host lectures highlighting the phenomenon of self-sacrifice, particularly as demonstrated throughout the Holocaust and times of crisis.

The lectures, running on college campuses throughout the US and abroad, commemorated the heroism demonstrated by Dr. Librescu during the deadly rampage of Cho Seung Hui on the campus of Virginia Tech. The Romanian-born Israeli Professor was shot to death while resisting the gunman so his students could escape.

Speakers thus far have included: Rabbi Nissan Mangel, Prof. Harry Reicher, Rabbi Dr. Immanuel Shochat, Dr. Judea Pearl, Dan Alon and others.

“Dr. Librescu displayed a courage and selflessness that few of us know or understand,” said Rabbi Shea Hecht of NCFJE, “This cannot be fully appreciated without first understanding his experience as a child survivor of the Holocaust.”

Dr. Librescu was killed as Jews throughout the world marked Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The program was sponsored by a Joe Lovece, Jr, of North Star, who, after learning of the events of the Virginia Tech massacre, felt moved to publicize Dr. Librescu’s heroism. He contacted Rabbi Shea Hecht of NCFJE who inspired him to fund events around the country.

Hey. Cool. NCFJE is sponsoring lectures on college campuses! I’d like to see more NCFJE activity on a large, public scale! They’re like a sleeping giant. Or maybe they just do things quietly. But still, it’s time for them to kick in to the big leagues. JJ wasn’t a schloffer, or a quiet, small fry operator. His institution and special relationship with the Rebbe should be translating into something large scale. Come one, NCFJE, keep up the good work and bigger, more and better.
