Photo of Bochurim Worth $2,500?

A decades-old photo of several Bochurim who seem to be waiting for the Rebbe’s farbrengen to begin has gone up for sale on the website of Heritage Auctions, the world’s third largest auction house. The starting bid? $750.

The black and white photo was taken by Jewish documentary photojournalist Leonard Freed.

According to the website, the photo was taken in 1954. However, upon closer examination it appears that the date on the photo is faulty, since the basement of 770 – where the photo appears to have been taken – was not yet converted into the main Shul at that time.

Based on the dress of the Bochurim in the photo, it seems more likely that the it was taken in the late sixties to early seventies, possibly later.

Perhaps one of our readers can clarify the matter. Do you recognize anyone in the photo? If yes, can you verify what year it was taken?

The auction house estimates the photos value at $1,500 to $2,500. So far at least one person has placed a bid on it.

To #s 13 & 14 I think sarcasm could become your middle name. It’s not very nice to speak like that, especially when they are Chasidim.
