Video: Lubavitcher Family Rescued from Flooded Van

Tanya, the mother of a Lubavitch family in Staten Island, was driving five of her young children to Cheder in Morristown this morning, when her car began to submerge in flooding caused by heavy rains. The dramatic rescue of the family was caught on camera by ABC 7 Eyewitness News.

From ABC 7 Eyewitness News:

Heavy rain overnight led to some flooding problems and rescues in the Newark area Monday morning. Several people who were trapped in their cars were pulled to safety by emergency responders.

Captain John Brown with the Newark Fire Department says there were cars stuck in water at several locations, but firefighters made three main rescues.

A woman and her five children were stuck at the Meeker Avenue underpass, and cell phone video captured the dramatic rescue.

Mom Tanya tells Eyewitness News that all she could think of was getting her kids out of their car safely. She was driving from Staten Island to Morristown to drop her kids off at school.

At first, she said the water looked like a puddle. But when she started driving through it, her vehicle stalled and the water started pouring in. She tried to calm her kids — ages 13, 9, 6, 4 and 2 — by reassuring them everything would be OK.

Tanya says she is grateful to the Newark Fire Department, specifically Engine 29.

“I’m glad they came,” she said. “They said a manhole was open, and we could’ve just gone down if we would have gone outside by ourselves. So they walked us with the sticks out of the car, and they carried the children.”

Officials remind drivers to avoid driving through standing water, which may be deeper than it appears.

Elsewhere, two adults were saved from another vehicle at the same underpass, while a woman was pulled from her flood vehicle at Foundry and Hawkins.
