Obama Declares Rebbe’s Birthday ‘Education Day’

U.S. President Barack H. Obama issued a proclamation declaring today, April 3rd / 11 Nissan, the Birthday of the Lubavicther Rebbe Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, to be hitherto known as ‘National Education and Sharing Day, USA.’

EDUCATION AND SHARING DAY, U.S.A., 2012

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

For centuries, the pursuit of knowledge and the cultivation of character have driven American progress and enriched our national life. On Education and Sharing Day, U.S.A., we renew our commitment to these timeless aspirations, and we rededicate ourselves to fostering in our sons and daughters inquiring minds and compassionate hearts.

In a global economy where more than half of new jobs will demand higher education or advanced training, we must do everything we can to equip our children with the tools for success. Their journey begins early, and it demands stewardship from throughout the community — from parents and caregivers who inspire a love of learning to teachers and mentors who guide our children along the path to achievement. Our Nation’s prosperity grows with theirs, and by ensuring every child has access to a world class education, we reach for a brighter future for all Americans.

Yet, we also move forward knowing we cannot secure the promise of tomorrow through formal education alone. With each generation, our Nation has confronted questions that tested the quality and character of our people. We have borne witness to seemingly insurmountable problems of inequality, oppression, or dire circumstance at home and abroad, and where we have recognized injustice, the way forward has not always been clear. Time and again, during moments of trial, Americans have demonstrated a fundamental commitment to compassion, cooperation, and goodwill toward others — doing not what is easy, but what is right. These qualities have come to define us, and as we prepare today’s students to become tomorrow’s leaders, let us nourish in them the virtues that have sustained our country for generations.

On Education and Sharing Day, U.S.A., we reflect on the teachings of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, who embodied that humanitarian spirit. As a tireless advocate for youth around the world, he inspired millions to lift the cause of education, to practice kindness and generosity, and to aspire toward their highest ideals. His enduring legacy lives on in those he touched, and today, we resolve to carry forward his dedication to service and scholarship.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim April 3, 2012, as Education and Sharing Day, U.S.A. I call upon all Americans to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this third day of April, in the year of our **** two thousand twelve, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-sixth.

BARACK OBAMA

Interesting, when you consider the animosity that Lubavitch has for any form of higher education. I’m not sure what the individual who wrote this was referring to when he wrote “he inspired millions to lift the cause of education.” Last time I checked, if anybody in this community even considered going to college he is immediately shunned and criticized and informed of the Rebbe’s staunch opposition to the above mentioned higher education. Weird that this would be the focus of the Rebbes birthday celebration. If the letter would talk about The Rebbe’s tireless devotion to spreading Yiddishkeit it would make more sense.

  • re:Ignorant in Crown Heights

education is not just about earning a living.. it is about being an upright citizen.

in any case, college grads are the worst off in today’s job market.

  • to#5

boy you got it wrong, the unemployment rate for college graduates is HALF that of ppl with less education. yes HALF. thank you for showing your ignorance in this…

  • yep #2 your definitely ignoranr

    To #2,
Yep i think you are the ignorant one
if you consider yourself a lubavitcher chossid and henceforth believe what the Rebbe sais to be true, the rebbe spoke about what education is at a farbrengin 5741 SICHA stating that education isn’t an ends of its own ,true education is about utilizing knowledge for morality, education is about living a moral life and no one truly personified this point more than the Rebbe.

First of all I knew the “ yup you truly are ignorant” comment was coming. Come on #8 I’m sure you have a bit more creativity in you then that, please up your game a bit. Secondly, I think it is rather pathetic to keep pushing this archaic agenda down our children’s throats. How many more misguided op-eds can be posted on these websites attempting to find the reason for the mass decline in adherence to the ideals we were taught as children, when the answer is right in front of our faces. When the youth feel hopeless and that they have a life of mediocrity to look forward to, they will rebel. When they feel that their life will be defined by how much they receive in monthly food stamps and Welfare they will be disheartened. And when they see that there is no hope for change coming any time soon, they will seek to find their future someplace else. ITS THAT SIMPLE. So it is high time to move forward and save our youth from falling into the abyss. Not by forcing them to marry younger as was suggested recently by some “brilliant” people, but by providing our youth with actual hope for their futures. An actual real education they can use to lift them selves up and build real successful lives that follow in the teachings we were all taught while at the same time having the means to support their families. The idea of having a YU type yeshiva was recently proposed by an op-ed writer and I couldn’t agree more. Thirdly, how can we possibly utilize knowledge for morality when we are severely lacking in knowledge? Morality shouldn’t the highest of humanities goals but rather its most basic goals. The Seven Noahide Laws are about human morality and I think we can collectively aspire to do more than that. Lastly, if you would actually read what Obama wrote you would see that he is specifically talking about college, which obviously we are vehemently against. “In a global economy where more than half of new jobs will demand higher education or advanced training, we must do everything we can to equip our children with the tools for success. Their journey begins early, and it demands stewardship from throughout the community — from parents and caregivers who inspire a love of learning to teachers and mentors who guide our children along the path to achievement. Our Nation’s prosperity grows with theirs, and by ensuring every child has access to a world class education, we reach for a brighter future for all Americans”. No mention of morality, he is speaking specifically about a means to earn a decent living. So whether The Rebbe spoke about what an education is really about or not, in a sicha in 5741 is not really relevant here. Clearly, this letter is talking about college and wage earning potential. That is why I wrote my earlier comment, it was not a referendum on our definition of education, but rather to point out the irony, that the very content of Obama’s letter goes against our belief system. Happy Pesach to all.

  • NOBAMA 2012.

This Education Day is a formality that goes back to Jimmy Carter YMACH SHMO. Every president since 1978 has signed this declaration.

In no way should we base our decisions to vote for a candidate who has the proper values for a Ben Noiach on this formality.

  • college is a nightmare

College is awful. Been there done that. I wish I knew from the Rebbe X to go to college before I went to college.

Obama will use any opportunity to get votes. Don’t forget he’s a Muslim. He wanted to revert Israel’s borders back to 1967.

lips pursed, looks annoyed… so different from the smiling pics of Reagan and others…. body language says a lot.

I know one thing for sure is the rebbe wouldn’t want his children arguing online like this. And second the rebbe discouraged collage for religious girls and boys because of the negative affect it can have. This is true and i have seen the affect first hand. On the other hand there are ways to get a collage education online. Thank Hashem for technology! And if you cannot then you have to know yourself, your limits and strength. Be extremely cautious, get in and get out…do what you have to for your job and education and move on. The main thing is we MUST stick together…we are all headed in the same direction!
