Chabad Rabbi Knighted by Moroccan King
Morocco’s King, Mohammed VI, granted knighthood to Rabbi Raphael Benchimol, a Chabad Chossid and spiritual leader of the Manhattan Sephardic Congregation.
The ceremony took place during times of tension between Israel and its neighbors, showing that there can be mutual respect between Jews and Muslims.
The ceremony was held at the Center for Jewish History in Manhattan with many distinguished guests, led by Mr. Serge Berdugo, Ambassador of the Moroccan King, who chaired the ceremony. Also participating was Morocco’s ambassador to the United States, Mr. David Dangoor, Chairman of the American Sephardi Federation, and adviser to UN Secretary General.
Mr. Berdugo praised Rabbi Benchimol for his loyalty and his active role in the Moroccan community, noting that he is working hard to restore the Jewish holy places in Morocco.
“I am delighted to give the medal to a person of principle and action, learning and knowledge, a man who serves his community faithfully, a friend and supporter in Morocco,” said the Ambassador.
Rabbi Benchimol was born in Morocco and emigrated with his family to Miami. He studies at a Chabad school, and was ordained as Rabbi and Dayan in Tomchei Tmimim – 770. He would teach Torah classes in Manhattan as part of his activities in the “uforatzta” organization.
The participants of his shiur, who founded the synagogue following his weekly gatherings, turned to Rabbi Benchimol to lead the new congregation. He was 23, and has since lead his flock with exemplary leadership.
