Purim in Kiev: A Red Carpet Event
As has become a tradition in Kiev, this last week guests from all over Kiev and other cities in Ukraine gathered together in the 5 star Intercontinental Hotel to celebrate a Japanese themed Purim Party in style at a grand Purim Seudah hosted by Raphael and Devorah Rutman. Rabbis and Shluchim from different cities in Ukraine, Ambassadors, public figures, dignitaries and representatives from the local and international business communities joined together to fulfill all 4 mitzvos of the day.
The participants, who all came in creative and original costumes, enjoyed a 5 course gourmet meal as well as separate adults and children’s programs.
The evening began with the reading of the megillah, accompanied by a multi media film presentation of the Purim story. The guests were then invited in to the decorated hall to take their places and begin the Purim Seudah. After greetings from the host, and a special prayer service led by Rabbi Yossi Glick, head of Tzivos Hashem in the CIS, followed by a Dvar Torah by Rabbi Mayer Stambler, chairman of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Ukraine, the party got under way. The program included a Samurai warrior performance as well as a first time ever guest appearance by the “French Twins”, who were flown in especially for the event.
After music, dancing and festivity, the evening ended off with the annual grand red carpet “Purim’s Got Talent” costume competition. Adults and children alike had their opportunity to walk the red carpet as 3 judges, each a famous face in fashion and television, scored their costumes. The winners (1st 2nd and 3rd in both the Children’s and Adults Divisions) were awarded prizes including airline tickets, free car rentals and other luxury prizes.
The party lasted way into the night, with the participants dancing and rejoicing to the sound of Jewish music. And the city of Kiev “tzahalah v’sameicha.”
