Pct. Commander Visits Darchei Menachem Following Attack
The commanding officer of the 71st Precinct, Deputy Inspector George Fitzgibbon, visited Darchei Menachem this afternoon, where he met with the school’s administrator, principal and other members of the faculty to discuss yesterday’s rock throwing incident against several students, which left a 9-year-old boy with an eye injury.
Accompanying the commanding officer was Detective Vincent Martinos, who heads the 71st Precinct’s Community Affairs Unit.
The deputy inspector spoke about what police are doing in response to the attack, and what steps they are taking to prevent such attacks from happening in the future.
“I have children of my own, so I fully relate to what the parents of these children are going through,” he said. “If my daughters were under any kind of threat on their way to school, I would want to immediately put an end to it.”
Before their arrival at Darchei Menachem, the two officers went around to about eight public schools in the area, and warned students there about what the possible consequences of such actions are.
Inspector Fitzgibbon said that due to the nature of the attack, he doesn’t believe that it was pre-meditated. “Kids often do things without considering the repercussions of their actions and the consequences that follow” he said.
He said that police are eager to apprehend at least one of the perpetrators of yesterday’s attack, since the resulting repercussions would go a long way toward discouraging other kids from doing anything of the sort in the future.
Inspector Fitzgibbon also assured the school’s administrators that a police officer will be posted outside the school building at dismissal time, and that he will remain in touch with them so they can work together to ensure the safety of every student to the best of their ability.
