PSA: City to Sell Dozens of CH Homes Tax Liens
Dozens of properties in Crown Heights are currently in delinquency after not paying their property taxes. Jacob Goldstein, chairman of Community Board 9 sent out a letter urging homeowner to take care of the liens before the city auctions them off in the next few weeks.
PUBLIC NOTICE TO THE OWNER’S OF PROPERTY IN CROWN HEIGHTS
VERY IMPORTANT PLEASE READ
MAY 8 2013
On midnight May 16th the properties listed below entered as a tax lien by the City of New York to be sold the following day, May 17th by the City of New York to prospective buyers. Until May 16th you will be able to work out your payment with the City of New York, Department of Finance to avoid this problem. What will occur if you do not resolve payment with the City is that they will sell their tax lien on your property to an outside party who will then have a claim and if you do not resolve it with them will take ownership of your property and sell it at auction.
You have been sent notices by the City of this pending against your property and you have ignored it and now the City is moving forward on a city-wide tax lien sale on May 17th for all 5 boroughs. You must remember that you still have to pay the City the taxes , water and sewer bill charges. Those of you who have paid off your mortgages are still obligated to pay water, sewer, and property tax. Just because you have concluded your mortgage payments you still are obligated for the charges.
If you are one of those people who has a piece of property listed below please take care of your financial obligations as soon as possible as May 16th is rapidly approaching.
This office received the list of all properties targeted within the boundaries of Community Board 9 and I took it upon myself to separate out those properties I felt belonged to Schunah residents. There are many more properties on the list on different streets so if you received from the City regarding your property and you are not on the list below please do not disregard the notices and satisfy your lien obligations.
f am writing this letter as a Public Service Announcement to advise everyone of the immediate pending sale. Please take this matter seriously. Your hard work to own your own home will be jeopardized if you ignore the lien sale.
DO NOT CONTACT COMMUNITY BOARD 9 REGARDING THE LIEN SALE, YOU MUST CONTACT THE NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE FOR ALL THE DETAILS FOR PAYMENT.
Sincerely,
Rabbi Jacob Goldstein
Chairman Community Board 9

You should be ashamed of yourself for publishing this list. No one on that list did anything that deserves to be embarrased in public.
Yes, it is public information easily available on the net. But you are not the city of new york!!!
Can I assume that you have a gripe with at least one of the home owners on the list???
terrorists
yep! im sure chi has a problem with 749 and 1414. lol!
now for real: some people have no clue that they are included in the list. so long as you have a mortgage, the bank takes care of the tax bills, part of the mortgage payment goes into escrow to pay for future bills.
and once you finish paying off the mortgage it is the homeowners responsibilities to take care of it.
after 30 or 15 years of just throwing out any mail about taxes, you simply continue to throw it out since you dont think about that fact… i know that is how my address got on the list.
if publishing this alerts just one homeowner then it is a huge chessed and would prevent even bigger shame and potential problems.
no one assumes that people intentionally didn’t pay or because they cant afford to, these are bills that are many years old that MOST DEFFINATLY were forgotten about.
Brains
Are you out of your mind? he is writing this list to help people that may not know they have a lien. He gains nothing out of it. This is the best way to let people know.
where to go
If i want to buy one of the above addresses. where do i go? I like a property there that has no one living in it and has been abandoned for a while. where will the auction take place?
Water Liens
What about water charges liens? The City is auctioning those off too.
how can i buy them
forget the taxes please give me info on how i can purchase all these houses
fedup
you can place bids for 1414 in the following web site:

WONDERING
1414 PRESIDENT STREET?????
That's a nice thing to do!
Rabbosai, you have a big problem if you don’t pay up. Tough one to do with almost no notice if the bills are huge.
1414???
Gee I would want to buy that building and build there condos!! And 749 also!
CHLEAKS.COM
I feel bad for everyone on that list except for 749, can’t wait untill that place is shut down.
Besides the lien they owe almost a million dollars in violations.
Ch'er
A few years back, when our house was posted as being in foreclosure, a neighbor came over in Shul offer to help us out financially so we wouldn’t lose the house. That was the first thought of a “mentch” before thinking “how fast can I buy this house at a good price?”
CHLEAKS.COM
Leave that to the Sperlin family to do.
To # 3
This was great that they put this up, because we always assumed our parents were taking care of their tax bill, and lo and behold we noticed it on this list, and now it going to be taken care of. So my parents will not be homeless now!
Thank you for publishing this.
Liens Only
They are only selling the liens, not the properties. The liens can still be paid later, to the buyers of the liens. But the amount owed goes up quite a bit. Eventually, and it could be years from now, the lien purchaser might foreclose on the encumbered property.
Crown heights resident
Very typical of cb 9 telling us about tax lean problems,
How difficult would it have been for them to them to tell us where to go to rectify !
NY chutzpah
Can’t believe a government can sell your house for tax money! Not paying a mortgage I understand; getting sued and a judgment to garnish wages/benefits for back taxes, ok. But selling someone’s house? Should not be legal.
Disappointed
While it was very noble of this office to take the time to research which homes on this list belonged to shchunah residents, so to help out these people with delinquent property taxes, a quick phone call or an email would have been much more along the lines of ahavas yisroel. This is an embarrassment for so many people ( who are having a hard enough time as it is) and it could have been avoided. Now the whole “shchunah” is busy doing their researching. Yuck. Ch info,do the right thing and Take down this article.
CHESED
Thank G-D
many of us Lubavitcher Chasidim were busy today how to help people who are behind on the bills.
Thank you Chi
that was big CHESED you did today
Disagree w/ may sayers
I am from out of town and I recognize an address on the list. I want to help them. To be go honest. It’s way more expensive to help a family after the fact and when they are god forbid homeless. I do t for one second think there are people who would have the nerve to go out and buy these notes and for close on other frum members of the community. If there are shame on them. As far as those on the list either they are in foreclosure with their bank so they don’t care about the taxes or they may not know. Nothing to be embarrassed about. I almost forgot to pay mine once too.
Unfortunately
It did happened in Crown Heights
A Jew bought property and evicted the homeowner
Instead of helping the family pay the delinquent bill
Beware of the wiked around you and help the the homeowners that need your help now
English
If you’re going to write in the English language, please learn to follow its rules. This is embarrassing. Really elementary mistakes are being made in a letter sent to the entire community. You should know better.
insider
hey!
580 crown st is on the list!
thats the new condo building!
Tuition
I know some one on this list who has Ble Ayin Hara a big family and his address is on this list. For him this is very embarrassing. It should of been send only to these people on the list. The reason for most of his financial problem’s is TUITION.
May Hashem have Rachmonos on us and bring Moshiach now.
We all should be in Israel before Shevuas Dancing with the Rebbe.
CHI. Keep up the great work.

To all those that think that it is great that the list was published,
You’ve obviously never been embarrassed in public B”H. May you continue to be blessed!
For those that have been embarrassed, May Hashem bless you with the funds needed to pay your lien and all the rest of your needs!
P.S. Joe, you could’ve answered once…..
please stop speaking for everyone
To all of the the people that are saying that posting this list is a embarrassment to those on the list…..I think every last person who saw the article title while flipping through heart sank and thought ,I hope Im not in danger of losing my property, and then for there to be a convenient list was a very helpful and kind thing,so that 100’s of people can make sure they arent in any danger of losing there homes and that those people who are know righf away!some people dont have email and somtimes nobody lives in that house but still own it so there is no one to call and this list is the only way they can be informed!
Thank you dearly for posting this list!

You can go down to 210 Joralamon 4th floor or 66 John street and the city will work out a payment arrangement with you. You can pay it out over 10 years. You will need to bring ID and documentation that you are the homeowner or designated person to deal with these matter, A notarized letter will do.
It was completely not necessary to publish the list with addresses here. It is embarrassing to those that for whatever reason have their names published here. My address is on this list and in my particular case it was a mistake on the part of the city.
CH homeowner...
But no names WERE published – only property addresses. For those who feel it’s not nice to publicize this information because it may embarrass someone, let them not do the Internet research to match the names with the properties. It’s enough to verify that YOUR home is not on the list.
But for the person whose property IS on the list, it’s a great chesed to give him the heads-up.
What’s the saying? No good deed goes unpunished? (uncriticized, in this case)

Wonderful to see that everyone wants to help.
May I suggest that we put together a list of people that have helped these home owners pay their bill and publish it on CH.INFO.
Mitsva lifarsem oisey mitzva!
Joe, can you start a new thread:
C.H. residents help their neighbors after seeing post on CH.INFO.

#26…….the reason he has problems is overextending a budget
Ahuva
I find it very sad that when my father – who has been Chairman of community board 9 ( a NON paying job) tries to help out by posting something that is public knowledge, gets bashed by people. Kol Hakovoed to those that thanked him. He specifically DID NOT publish names so that no one would be embarrassed. But this is a serious matter that should not be laughed off. The reason my father published this was because the last lien sale, which was ignored by some residents of our community, cost them thousands of dollars and lots of grief to redeem the lien. This was the purpose of why my father published the address so that people would take notice and action before the sale takes place.
You don't buy the house!
People,
You don’t actually buy the houses at auction!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You buy the lien, meaning, you get to now come after the property owners for the taxes owes plus a twenty percent increase. The person has several months to pay you back the taxes plus the interest to you and if they can’t/don’t make the payments after the amount of time allotted than and only than can start the process of trying to take their house from them as payment, but I’m almost sure you will still have to pay money for the house, perhaps a lower amount of money since money is technically owed to you from the lien you purchased.
