Bochurim Sell T-Shirts to Raise Funds

For the past 12 years, Camp Yeka has received a grant which covered the majority of the actual cost of each camper’s food and lodging. Unfortunately, this year there is no funding at all.

This year due to financial problems many Shluchim throughout Ukraine won’t be making a camp for the children of their community including the Shliach who formerly financed the majority of funds needed to cover running the camp. The staff from the previous years care – and are taking that caring to the next level.

Camp Yeka is an overnight camp for Jewish boys from all over Ukraine. Based on the outskirts of the city of Zhitomer, the camp strives to provide these boys with a warm and caring atmosphere. Most of these boys are orphans, or come from broken and dysfunctional homes where hunger and abuse are rampant. Camp Yeka, or Yeka for short, offers these boys an oasis of security and hope.

The thought of their former campers, and other Ukrainian Jewish children, not having Camp Yeka to look forward to is worse than taking on the difficult task of raising the necessary funds so that Jewish children throughout Ukraine will have the summer experience they so desperately need. Boruch Hashem they were able to secure campgrounds and a cook, and have already received calls from desperate Shluchim around the Ukraine thanking them for providing a camp for these children.

The camp has a full range of activities and sports, serves hot nourishing meals, and takes the boys on exciting trips. Although at home in their respective villages, they are often faced with anti-Semitism, in camp the kids are able to discover and explore their rich Jewish heritage, and meet other Jewish children. They make life-long friendships with fellow campers and counselors, built on acceptance and trust. These friendships, and the powerful camp experience, strengthen their character and morale, giving them the courage to face their life’s challenges.
