Toronto Mayor Wishes ‘Shana Tova’ Via Shliach
Mayor Rob Ford wished a Shana Tova Umetukah (Good and Sweet Year) to the Jewish community at a private taping in his office arranged by Rabbi Moshe Steiner of Uptown Chabad.
Mayor Ford also presented a framed letter to Rabbi Steiner, which stated in part: “The beginning of a new year is a wonderful time to pray for peace and reflect on the difference we can make in bettering communities here and around the world. Toronto’s Jewish community continues to make invaluable contributions to the growth and well being of our city and has steadfastly enhanced Toronto’s socioeconomic status substantially over many, many generations. I wish you a sweet New Year as you look forward to a happy, healthy and prosperous year ahead.”
Rabbi Steiner told the Jewish Tribune that Mayor Ford had made a “surprise appearance” at Uptown Chabad’s gala evening in March. “He was so warm and friendly to our community, so a couple of weeks ago I asked if he would consider offering greetings to the Jewish community in honour of Rosh Hashanah and he said yes.”
Rabbi Steiner blew the shofar in the Mayor’s office before Mayor Ford gave the greeting on behalf of himself, his family, Toronto City Council and the residents of Toronto.
Afterward, the small gathering moved to the adjacent boardroom, where Rabbi Steiner blew the shofar again and led the prayers. The rabbi’s mother, Sherryl Steiner, lit candles and said the blessing. Everyone partook of wine, challah, pomegranate, apples and honey as Rabbi Steiner explained the significance of each item.
Rabbi Steiner said he decided to use this opportunity to create a video which will explain the meaning of Rosh Hashanah and include the mayor’s message. The video will be made available online as soon as it is finished.
