Three young rabbis on a 4,000 mile trek across the U.S. stopped into Houston on their bicycles to promote a national nonprofit volunteer organization.
Daniel Saul, Zalman Perlman, and Shmuel Rothstein, known as the Rolling Rabbis, rode into Houston on Sunday morning and arrived to the Chabad Lubavitch center on Fondren Road.
The Rolling Rabbis were raising awareness about the Friendship Circle, which brings teen volunteers together with children who have special needs. The volunteers visit the homes of the children and take part in outings with them.
The Friendship Circle, which was founded in Detroit in 1995, has 84 branches across the world with 10,000 teen volunteers. The organization also provides respite for families, recreational group programming, life skills training, winter and summer camps, athletic opportunities, and educational and social events for teen mentors through its International Volunteer Club program.
The Rolling Rabbis tour across the U.S. began June 26 in New Jersey. They plan to ride between 100 and 120 miles each day in less than seven hours and are asking for donations of $4/mile.
Houston Mayor Annise Parker issued a proclamation at the reception Sunday.
