Houston Police Week Features Chabad
Chabad of Houston’s Rabbi Chaim Lazaroff participated in a Day of Prayer Ceremony, as part of the National Police Week festivities at the Houston Police Department.
Rabbi Lazaroff invoked a lesson from Moses, who called for the police officers, while transmitting the Torah and the song of Haazinu on the last day of his life. This was to ensure that they would keep the nation adherent to the Torah. Appropriately, the police officers also are called peace officers, as they are keepers of the peace and not only law enforcement.
The prayer included words for the mayor, police chief and all police officers, including a memorial for those who have fallen in the line of duty.
The ceremony was held on the street in front of the Houston Police Headquarters at 1200 Travis. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation, which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. National Police Week is a time of honoring, remembering and healing. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers, from around the world, converge on Washington to participate in a number of planned events, which honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
