Ground Broken for Chabad House in Manchester

The Jewish community from across the city and state celebrated the ground-breaking ceremony Sunday of the first Chabad house in New Hampshire, the Chabad Center for Jewish Living.

The goal is for the future home of the center, a plot recently cleared at 2233 River Road near the Derryfield School, to be completed by Hanukkah, according to Chabad Lubavitch of New Hampshire.

Rabbi Levi Krinsky said the Chabad Center for Jewish Living will include a sanctuary, administrative offices and a Judaic library.

After the ground-breaking, Krinsky said the center would be a hub for the Jewish community. It would be a place for family and faith, for young people and for older generations to share insight and wisdom, he said.

“This is for Jews of all ages,” he said. “It’s never, ever too late to start learning.”

It is an estimated $2 million project, about half of which has been raised, Krinsky said.

Steve Singer said he and his family have made a six-figure challenge grant to the Chabad Center, with the commitment challenging others to match it.

“This has been a long time coming,” Singer said.

More than a hundred people attended the ceremony, which included a kosher barbecue, music and a BMX and skateboard demonstration by the Northeast Trickstars.

The ceremonial shovel of dirt was actually 11 shovels, with six of them toy shovels for a gaggle of children wearing small hard hats. The act was symbolic, of course. This Chabad house, as Krinsky said, is for today and for generations to come.ing will include a sanctuary, administrative offices and a Judaic library.
