Group Photo of Shluchim Wins National Award
New York Daily News staff photographer Todd Maisel and his photo of more than 4,000 rabbis waiting for their annual group picture at last year’s International Conference of Chabad-Lubavitch Emissaries won an honorable mention in the National Press Photographers Association’s 2010 Best of Photojournalism contest.
Maisel’s image captures a slightly-elevated glimpse of bearded men in black jackets and hats crowded in front of Lubavitch World Headquarters in Brooklyn, N.Y., and spilling over part of the neighborhood’s central artery of Eastern Parkway. It was submitted in the contest’s General News division, which highlights outstanding achievement based on creativity and timing at organized events.
Every year, the conference’s group photo presents major logistical hurdles for organizers, and for the journalists who cover the event.
Maisel said that he was proud of the achievement, and thanked Rabbi Motti Seligson, who handles media relations for the Chabad-Lubavitch Media Center and its Chabad.org Web site, for helping make the image possible.
“It takes a vision to make a great photo,” said Maisel.
Some 3,000 entrants from 147 countries submitted more than 50,000 still images, video and Web entries in this year’s competition, which is co-sponsored by the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, ibilbio, Camera Bits, Ohio University, and the St. Petersburg Times.
