Caterer Joins Relief Efforts With Hamentachen for Haiti
Popular Seattle, Wash., caterer Leah’s Catering and the Stroum Jewish Community Center have launched a Purim-themed fundraising drive to benefit earthquake relief in Haiti.
Called “Hamentachen for Haiti,” the project, which launched on Monday, will send 100 percent of profits from the sales of the traditional jam-filled holiday cookie to the Chabad Haiti Relief Fund operated by Chabad-Lubavitch of the Dominican Republic.
Leah Jaffee, whose catering company was voted “Best Caterer” by readers of the local Jewish newspaper, said that the cookies will be offered in five flavors, and will be available in locations across the Seattle area.
Her idea for the campaign joins synagogue-based and Jewish community efforts across North America that have been sending money and supplies to victims of last month’s devastating quake.
“Money, more than my physical presence, is needed at this time,” said Jaffee. “I hope to spend time [this summer] cooking in the Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, we’ll bake hamentachen.”
The Jewish holiday of Purim, which recalls the events told in the biblical Book of Esther, occurs this year on the night of Feb. 27. For more information, click here.
Loz shoin up mit der Haiti
1. Aniyei Ircha Kodmim.
So many of our own mosdos are choking for money, and Chabad is brainwashing to donate to Haiti.
For Chabad anywhere to become a relief organization is a deviation of the Rebbe’s objective. If this was done as part of a Sheva Mitzvos Bnei Noach campaign, (which Haiti desperately needs) it would be completely different.
Please, let’s not try and impress goyim or even other Jews.
Invest in Jewish education, and in charity in Eretz Yisroel.
(that’s what the Torah shebiKsav of Chabad – Tanya writes.)
2. Any money sent to Haiti is wasted.
The people have no law and order infrastructure and the billions of $$$ in aid sent there has had no lasting results.
The best investment anyone (who should be investing there)
is to hire a security company and to teach the people basic law and order. But like most people, they are too proud to accept outside jurisdiction, just their handouts.
