Hands-On Training at Rabbinical College

by Eitan Goldberg

MORRISTOWN, NJ [CHI] — This past Wednesday a live demonstration on koshering meat was performed at the Rabbinical College of America. Rabbi Yakov Mendel Zirkind who is a Shochet (expert in the laws of slaughtering and preparing kosher meat) facilitated the purchase of a freshly slaughtered sheep, as well as the special USDA permit required to remove its intact carcass from the slaughter-house. With the assistance of Rabbi Chaim Schapiro, who directs the Semicha Program (training program for rabbinic ordination) at the college.

Zirkind removed the various organs and fats while pointing out which parts of the animal are not permitted by the laws of Kashrus (Jewish dietary law). He also inflated the lungs to inspect them for any defects or adhesions which if present would disqualify the whole animal from kosher consumption. Following the two hour presentation which included soaking and salting the meat – required by the laws of kashrus to remove all remaining blood from the meat, the 40 rabbis-in-training returned to their intense text based study of Jewish law with a better appreciation of its application. Rabbi Moshe Herson who is the head Chabad emissary in the state of New Jersey, and dean of the Rabbinical College was present and commented, “We are very pleased that the Semicha Program has been intensifying its Shimush – practical components of training which are so important to our future rabbis”.
