Prime Minister Visits the Yeshiva Centre – Chabad NSW Headquarters
BONDI, NSW, Australia [CHI] — Australia’s Prime Minister, the Hon Kevin Rudd MP, visited the Yeshiva Centre – Chabad NSW Headquarters in Bondi, on Friday afternoon. In front of a packed audience of over 600, including Jewish community leaders and more than 40 Rabbis, the Prime Minister was presented with a Menorah (Jewish Candelabra) by the Dean and Spiritual Leader of the Yeshiva Centre, Rabbi Pinchus Feldman OAM.

The visit continues the Prime Minister’s strong support for and close association with the Yeshiva Centre. “I am proud to be giving my third address to the Yeshiva community in Sydney; first as Opposition Leader at the Yeshiva Gala Dinner in 2007, then as Prime Minister at this year’s dinner via a video message and today in person at the Yeshiva’s central premises,” the Prime Minister told the crowd.
Chabad is the largest Jewish outreach movement in the world, operating in more than 100 countries. They run centres in the CBD, St Ives, Redfern, Dover Heights, Bondi Beach, Double Bay and many other locations across NSW. Their aim is to encourage acts of goodness and kindness based on the wisdom and teachings of their mentor, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson of blessed memory, who lived in New York.
Rabbi Schneersohn was posthumously awarded the United States Congressional Gold Medal of honour in 1995 for his contribution to humanity and his birthday is proclaimed annually “Education & Sharing Day USA” by successive US Presidents since Jimmy Carter.
Chabad has a longstanding tradition of presenting a Menorah to the relevant country’s leadership.
On receiving the pure Silver Menorah, handcrafted by the Hazorfim Silversmiths in Israel, the Prime Minister said, “The Menorah is a symbol of light. It is about the Jewish people’s tradition, in the words of the biblical prophet Isaiah, of being “a light unto the nations” and illuminating this world with acts of goodness and kindness.”
“It is very apt that the emblem of the Yeshiva Centre is the Menorah, because the Yeshiva epitomizes those acts of goodness and kindness that serve as a force for good in the world.”
The Prime Minister commended the Yeshiva Centre’s numerous social justice and welfare initiatives such the Yeshiva Welfare Fund which helps people in financial distress, the “Gift of Life” program which recruits people to the Australian Bone Marrow Registry to assist Leukaemia patients and Yeshiva’s Chaplains in the Australian Army, Police, Ambulance, Hospitals, Airports and Jails.
The Prime Minister made special mention of Yeshiva’s “Our Big Kitchen”, which he toured on the premises, and praised its humanitarian function of preparing food to help those in need and supporting Emergency Services Personnel.
The Prime Minister wished the guests a “Shabbat shalom”, a peaceful Sabbath and reaffirmed his friendship to the Australian Jewish community and Israel with the words “Am Yisrael Chai”, the Nation of Israel lives.
He congratulated Yeshiva’s spiritual Dean Rabbi Pinchus Feldman OAM and his wife, Rebbetzin Pnina Feldman, who this year mark their fortieth year as the guiding lights for the Yeshiva Centre and the Chabad Movement in NSW.
In a moving ceremony, Rabbi Feldman blessed the Prime Minister, reciting a prayer for the nation’s leaders, delivered on the Sabbath in Synagogues throughout Australia.
As a member of the Priestly family, Rabbi Feldman also bestowed the Priestly blessing from the Book of Numbers 6:24 on the Prime Minister and, through him, on the People of Australia.
“May the Almighty bless you and safeguard you.
May the Almighty illuminate his countenance to you and be gracious to you.
May the Almighty raise his face to you and grant you peace.”
The audience heard the traditional Aboriginal welcome from Indigenous Waverley Councillor, Dominic Wy Kanak, was entertained by students from the Yeshiva College choir and watched a video on the work of the Chabad Movement worldwide and the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
This was the second high profile visit to the Yeshiva Centre in the past few months.
Recently, the Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Yonah Metzger, officially opened the new school – Yeshiva College, at a ceremony also attended by Treasurer Wayne Swan, Shadow Treasurer Malcolm Turnbull and then Waverley Mayor George Newhouse.
The new school is an innovative concept in Jewish Education and a first in Australia, incorporating Jewish teachings with NSW Board of Studies curriculum outcomes.

“Chabad has a longstanding tradition of presenting a Menorah to the relevant country’s leadership” [usualy in Their “House”]
However, I think, that this is the first time that a Leader of a Great Nation has come TO OUR house to receive the Menorah.
Not since President George Washington received his.

I think that the fact that the Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon Kevin Rudd, M.P. has spoken at three Yeshiva functions in fifteen months highlights in what high regard he holds the Rebbe’s personal shaliach for NSW – Rabbi & Rebbetzin Feldman. May they continue to go from strenght to strenght in forging Judaism and good deeds.
