NYPD Vehicle Involved in an Accident
CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] – A Police Car was involved in an accident with a parked car this morning, which sent both officers to the hospital. The incident took place in front of Beis Rivka on Lefferts Avenue at around 8:00 AM, as parents were bringing their children to school.
More in the Extended Article!
The accident occurred as the Police officers of Car 1733, also known as the ticket car, observed a motorist make an illegal U-turn in front of the school. The officers engaged their emergency lights and sirens, proceeding to pull the motorist over, and as they were speeding over a second motorist made an illegal U-turn right in front of the police car. The police officer quickly swerved to avoid colliding with that vehicle, then losing control and colliding with a parked car instead.
FDNY EMS along with FDNY and NYPD ESU all responded to the scene, treated the officers and cleaned up the scene.
The cause for the officer losing control of his car is unclear, one of the factors involved was the leftover snow which turned to ice on the sides of the road, which may have contributed to causing this accident.
At the time of posting this, both officers had already been released from the hospital, both suffering from back and neck pain, but otherwise in good health, thank G-D.

the “polce” need to have some conmtrol. the ticket cars doesnt need to rush after each car to give a ticket in an unsafe spot. children are going to school so they will loose $75 its not worth it

POLICE…..Spell check!!!!!!!!!!!
A C.H. Parent
It’s not about ticketing the cars – it’s about following traffic rules – some of which are posted on a very large sign in front of the school. These are our girls – DO NOT MAKE U-TURNS in front of school – or a right hand turn. Please be careful when driving on Leffets.
CHer
The cops got to take it easy. Especially in neighborhoods where their other policing responsibilities aren’t quite up to par!
dave
wow i like how you write with such respect for the police who are trying to give us tickets instead of stopping the crime!!!!!!
BE HAPPY
everyone is always saying how police need to do a better job, RIGHT here they are trying to give someone a ticket! be happy they are doing they job, yes mistkaes sometimes happen and even cool policeman can lose control
A SHCUNA RESIDENT
It serves them right. they should be standing outside controlling the traffic & ensuring the safety of the children instead of sitting waiting to give out tickets!. When you need them they’re never around or take forever to respond
learn
your all right
the police have to right driving crazy around schools where C”V something can happen.
BTW kudos for the 2nd car who caused it all.
we should all (driving parents, kids and 1733) learn a good lesson from this
brstudent
we saw it happening
wow!
My sister watched it happened- she thought it was pretty cool!!!! :)
(p.s.- and scary!) too bad the principal didn’t let them continue watching it from the classroom windows!

Pople: I read all the comments, ypu are all right. Maybe now thhe ticketing in C.H. will slow down.
Response to A CH Parent. I like how u secifiy these are our girls, this is n.y. people do what they want even the cops.
look
(1) in the third picture you could see another person making another illegal u-turn,
(2) i’m guessing car number 1733 is going to be out of service for a Little while, ;)
The 71st Precinct Rocks and so does 1733
It will be back out in a few weeks cause the NYPD is self insured. They will tow it to queens and repair it in the NYPD’s main shop. If not they will remove the camera from the car and install it into another.
Gratful
YES! There IS a G-D!
Plenty to be grateful for
I have a special warm fuzzy place in my heart for police. I don’t believe they are capable of doing any wrong. The accident was a mistake, that’s why it’s called an accident.
I wish the police officers involved a speedy recovery. g-d bless the 71st precinct, g-d bless NY and g-d bless the USA.

What actually is the law of making a U turn and what makes it illegal? I am from upstate and if there is no sign then most turns are legal.
wrong judgment
Why do police give tickets in the first place??
– they say that the ticket might end up sometime stopping an accident
if so why do they drive so wild when giving a ticket in front of a school!!
Maybe the problem is that their issuing tickets, in the wrong place, to the wrong people (everyone knows who are the ones that speed and drive recklessly)!
speedy recovery!
we should acknowledge all the help and good the police are doing for our neighborhood, don’t forget they were injured on duty (helping make the streets safer).
(of course that doesn’t mean they cant do better!!)
A Parent in Shock
People! People! Are you all missing the point?
These retarded comments about ‘police should stop writing tickets and fight crime’ or better ‘police shouldn’t run to give tickets, endangering the children’ gee, yeh they cops weren’t trained how to drive and what is considered safe, but you, the anonymous commenter know better, right? WRONG!
Fighting crime is very much catching a robber, murderer or shoplifter, while at the same time issuing summonses for traffic violations, which in its own is breaking the law!
Imagine tomorrow the city decided that for one day all the traffic signals should all be green, so for one day everyone can get to work faster, could you imagine the chaos? The accidents? Now think about this, we all know there are traffic laws, but we all knew there was no one to enforce them, how many people would be breaking them so much more often? Illegal u-turns, cell phones, or better motorists running red lights!
So in answer to all you dim wits, we need traffic violation enforcement just as much as we need foot posts walking up and down Kingston Avenue.
These cops were posted in front of Beis Rivka at the administrations own request! The dangers that go on there when everyone is dropping their kids off, its miracles that nothing has happened until and please g-d should never ever happen.
There is a need for this car, their aggressive tactics have been reduced, you see the car more on Rogers and Bedford and even Utica then you see it actually in Crown Heights.
To the officers I wish a speedy recovery, and to those who don’t understand the logic, I give up, you’re hopeless.
none
I wan’t to tell you that it is all bais rivka falt. Why becouse do you have those sighns on any other schools.
No
Look at Oholi torah they can make a right turn from brooklyn Avenue onto Eastern pkwy and dose anyone say anything and there is hundreds of boys walking to school and these children have to cross a busy street Why dont they put a no turning sighn there.
The bottem line is that it is not fare if you do it by Bais Rivka than do it by ALL other schools.
It is very hard for us who live right by Bais Rivka and in the moring you are running to work Who has the extra few minuts to run around a few block it is an extra at least 5 minuts.
NOTRBA
I have no problem with cops giving tickets in a place where drivers make very dangerous U-Turns (as evident from THIS accident) but I do have a problem with setting up 1733 dragnet right in front of two schools.
I drop off my kid at mosdos and see those uturns all the time, but the cop makes traffic ten times worse by clogging it up with all the cars he has double parked while he gives tickets himself. couple that with the fact that its a dangerous place to be "catching" people, with all those children from two schools crossing the street, and this shows me that the cops shouldn’t set it up THERE. They need to figure out a better solution then clogging traffic and putting children at risk, just for a ticket.

A "U-turn" is any turn "executed so as to proceed in the opposite direction." Do not attempt a U-turn on a highway unless absolutely necessary. If you must turn around, use a parking lot, driveway or other area, and, if possible, re-enter the roadway going forward, not backing up.
You may make a U-turn only from the left portion of the lane closest to the centerline of the roadway, never from the right lane. Unless signs tell you otherwise, you may make a U-turn when you are given the go-ahead by a green arrow left-turn traffic signal, provided it is not prohibited and you yield to other traffic.
You may not make a U-turn near the crest of a hill, a curve or any other place where other drivers cannot see your vehicle from 500 feet (150 m) away in either direction. U-turns are also illegal in business districts of New York City and where NO U-TURN signs are posted. You may never make a U-turn on a limited access expressway, even if paths connect your side of the expressway with the other side.
Unless prohibited, a three-point turn may be used to turn around on a narrow, two-way street. You may be required to make one of these turns on your road test.
mystery
If people woudnt make illegal turns then this wouldnt happen.
8th grade student
i heard a siren and then a crash i looked outside my resource room window and saw the police car’s front all curmpled
