A Shomrim volunteer is never off duty.

Two Crown Heights Shomrim volunteers at work were suddenly thrust in their first responder roles Monday afternoon when a vehicle overturned directly behind them.

The incident took place around 3:15pm on E45th near Winthrop Street in Crown Heights after the vehicle hit a parked car and landed on its side.

While calling for 911, the volunteers secured the vehicle and ensured that the sole occupant of the vehicle was not in a life threatening situation.

Additional Shomrim volunteers arrived, keeping traffic open and ensuring that FDNY had easy access to the vehicle.

Firefighters were forced to stabilize the vehicle and extricate the vehicles sole occupant through the cars rear hatch. He was later transported by EMS to the hospital for evaluation.

“Our volunteers were alerted to the scene of an overturned vehicle with a pin,” Crown Heights Shomrim wrote on Instagram. “They immediately called 911 and kept traffic flowing smoothly, ensuring that Firefighters were able to access the scene and begin their extraction and rescue efforts.”
