Pedestrian Struck on Empire, Roadwork Blamed

CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — A pedestrian was stuck by a mini-van on Empire Boulevard this afternoon. Bystanders blamed construction work in the area. Hatzalah treated the pedestrian and transported him to Kings County Hospital.

The incident took place approximately 1:30pm, Wednesday at the busy intersection of Empire Blvd and Albany Ave; where lots of construction is currently underway.

The pedestrian, a Jewish male was struck mini-van while he was crossing the boulevard. The mini-van, driven by another Jewish local was turning on to boulevard from Albany Ave.

The pedestrian suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported by Hatzalah to Kings County Hospital. The driver of the mini-van was shaken up, but not physically hurt.

Bystanders blamed the accident on the construction work. The city is currently expanding the sidewalks, to make it safer for people to cross. City construction workers are working on two of the sidewalks corners simultaneously.

One witness said, he saw a construction wave a flag at the minivan to go ahead, without looking for pedestrians.

The roadwork is part of a citywide program to make especially wide streets safer to cross.

  • Sad

I kept on hearing big bangs from my house
When I heard sirens i thought someone was hurt directly from the construction.

This is a excellent project from the city,
The problem is that their trying to do it quick and cheap.
I like these projects but like everything sometimes its worth to do a little less but a better job

THE CHILD DOESN’T HAVE TO BE FRUM FOR YOU TO DAVEN FOR HIM!
THAT HE IS JEWISH IS ENOUGH!

I tried crossing that corner with a double stroller….those workers are completely useless. One told me to go ahead…straight into the path of a tractor. thanks for nothing. another one yelled at me and told me that i’d have to cross further down.

if you’re going to do construction on both sides of the street DO IT RIGHT!

These construction workers have no or are poorly trained in direction traffic. I too have been directed straight into a collision avoided only by my own quick eye and refusal to follow a workers instructions, over his objections (I was ordered to back over pedestrians!).

These are serious disasters waiting to happen.

King’s COunty is a level one Trauma center. Based on the patient’s suspected injuries/mechanism of injury EMS needs to transport to a trauma center.
