Driver Flees Scene of Fatal Bensonhurst Car Crash
Cops are hunting for a driver who fled the scene of a deadly Brooklyn crash that left three vehicles in flames – and one driver “burned beyond recognition” early Sunday, police said.
The 4:30 a.m. wreck in Bensonhurst produced a scene of shocking carnage.
Three vehicles were gutted by flames. Out of the open front passenger door of one hung portions of a hideously charred corpse.
A police source said investigators had yet to determine the gender of the dead person, who was “burned beyond recognition,” in the Ford Taurus taxi.
Cops said the chain-reaction crash began when a blue Dodge Caravan with Missouri plates traveling on 65th St. smashed into the Taurus.
Both vehicles careened wildly to the opposite side of the roadway, smashed into two parked cars, knocked down a tree and burst into flames. The Taurus appears to have rammed one of the parked cars into a building.
“There was a very loud explosion – huge!” said neighborhood resident Paul Jizewski, 24. “I kept hearing more popping after that. I came outside and there were three cars on fire.”
The driver of the Caravan bolted on foot, police said, but investigators were questioning a passenger who stayed behind.
Cops were canvassing the area, looking for leads on the missing driver.
“I heard a cop say, ‘Who saw the guy in the blue van run?’” Jizewski said.
