Pedestrian Struck and Injured on Albany Ave

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — A woman was struck by a car and injured in an accident this evening. The victim, an elderly black woman was crossing the intersection of East New York Avenue and Albany Avenue when a turning SUV knocked her over.

The driver, a Jew, stopped his car and immediately called for help, alerting 911, Hatzalah and Shormim. A lone police officer arrived on scene and took the drivers information, and Hatzalah began treating the woman with the assistance of a few Shomrim volunteers.

EMS arrived on scene shortly after and transported the woman, who appeared to have suffered from a broken ankle, to Kings County Hospital.

“Even more scary then being involved in this accident was that it was dark and outside of the Jewish community, thank g-d Shomrim and Hatzalah came, seeing some Jewish faces made me feel safer” said the driver, who is not from the area.

  • Be carefull

As a part-time driver and full-time pedestrian, the attitude about pedestrians is way off: when crossing, I must make eye contact with all drivers, as I am ‘in their way’ and they may not wait for me. When driving and waiting to allow someone to cross, I get the ‘beeeeeeeeeep!!!’ from cars behind me.
Maybe I should learn to fly…

  • At the scene

I was there when she got hit. I held her head in my lap as she was screaming and I called hatzolah. She was very scared. The driver did not see her as she was dressed in all black and that corner is poorly lit. He made a left as she was stepping out in to the street. You can see me in one of the picks. I tried to call Kings County to find out how she is but they would give me no info. i hope she is doing better .

  • OLD TIME DRIVER

AS A FULL TIME DRIVER FOR OVER 45 YEARS (AND B”H NO ACCIDENTS ON MY RECORD) I AM PETRIFIED TO DRIVE AT NIGHT AS BLACK PEOPLE ARE HARDLY VISIBLE, AND THEY DON’T WEAR LIGHT THINGS OR LUMINOUS STRIPS SO THAT THEY CAN BE SEEN. AND AM TOTALLY FRUSTRATED BY THE PEDESTRIANS WHO CONSTANTLY CROSS AT A MOST LIESURELY PACE ON RED LIGHTS SO THAT THE DRIVER IS FORCED TO STOP FOR THEM. THAT, IS ALOT MORE COMMON THAN THE BEEPING DRIVER AT THE PEDESTRIAN. YES, I SOMETIMES BEEP AT PEDESTRIANS THAT ARE STROLLING ACROSS THE STREET WHEN IT IS MY LIGHT. AND I SEE MANY PEOPLE CROSS THE STREETS WITHOUT LOOKING TO SEE IF THERE ARE ANY CARS COMING.
