SLOW DOWN
there are kids out there
its a good thing the girl was wearing a helmet, because her bike was completely totaled. i hope all parents out there make sure their kids are wearing helmets, and if they arent, they go out and buy one tonight…and one for themselves if they dont have one.

I hope this girl is ok, however, bikes do not belong in the city. Either take your kids to the park or cross with them.

No matter who’s fault it was, the driver should be commended for stopping and helping. If the driver would have been one of our “friendly neighbors” he wouldn’t have stopped!

To a concerned citizen – “bikes do not belong in the city”, huh? Maybe pedestrians don’t belong in the city either?! The only ones who don’t belong in the city are maniac drivers! We need lower speed limits on these avenues and radar enforcement.

refuah shlamoh i hope she has a speedy rovery and we can all learn a lesson from this which is to look before you cross the road and before you turn!!
infuriated
to ‘a resident’ what do you mean that the driver should be commended for stopping and helping! everyone is so used to drivers who run people over and disappear that it seems strange that a driver who ran this girl over should stop and help her! think how ridiculous is this comment you made!

While there are some drivers who drive too fast, I think simply stopping and looking around will show that in NYC it’s almost always pedestrians who are acting unsafely. It’s common for pedestrians to jaywalk, to ignore don’t walk signals and to just casually step out into the street in front of moving traffic. It’s obvious that many pedestrians place a great deal of faith in the skill and desire of random drivers not to kill them.
safety first
Raf is right…give the kids safety education. Include pool, bikes, road. Kids today don’t get it, & safety experts (FDNY, NYPD, Hatzalah) should go into the schools & speak to groups of students.
Every year we have tragedies…no more!!
Bikers Beware
I don’t think anything’s wrong with bikes in the city, BUT what happened to the rule of walking the bike when crossing the street? and looking before going into the crosswalk. I know it’s hard to do that when you’re riding, but you know that the streets aren’t so safe! So even though you have the right of way, you still need to be careful!
Another point:
Last night, as I was driving down Carroll St. between Kingston & Brooklyn, a bochur was riding his bike, from infront of a doubleparked car, in middle of the street, and rode into the street without looking! I almost hit him! Parents! If you live on that block, see where your 15-yr old was, last night (around 10:30ish) and admonish them! everyone else around town, also! Make sure your kids know to look before stepping into the street. Even though they’ll only be in the way of the cars for a second, alot can happen in that split second!

U can not totally blame the driver, lots of these kids need to taught how to cross a street.

To a concerned citizen – “bikes do not belong in the city”, – you are 100% correct! Let’s keep giving the local hospitals lots of business from our overweight community members. G-D forbid we teach our children to keep fit and healthy.

There were a few positive and constructive suggestions in these comments, so I would like to add this also. I spoke with a boy without a helmet on a bike last week, he said he did not have a helmet at home either. I think this is a responsibility of the parent, it should be a precondition for him riding his bike. if he does not want to wear it, then no ride. I know it took us drivers a while to get used to the habit of wearing seat belts but most of us today understand the consequences and do wear one. I also would like to see some reflectors and lites on the bikes that are out at nite. Lastly, in my experience most drivers who look to see if anything is in their way when turning might not be aware of a bike or even a motorcyle. This is simply because they are conditioned to look for cars or people in their way, hence not seeing even the motorcyle. Even as a pedestrian I have looked both ways and been suprised when a bike zoomed past, this does not relieve me from blame but this FACT should be known to anyone who is riding or walking in the street and that person just has to be doubly careful.
To AYF
The girl was crossing in the crosswalk. The driver was making a right turn onto Crown St. which means he had a green light, which in turn means the girl had the walk sign. Drivers have to be aware that when they have a green light and they want to turn the pedestrians also have a green light.
While you may be right that pedestrians are always jaywalking, that wasnt the case here. Your comment is out of context.

AT LEAST THE DRIVER DID WHAT EVERYBODY SHOULD DO THAT IS STOP AND CALL SOMEONE FOR HELP.

I sense some resistance. People, none of the streets in Crown Heights are the NYS Thruway. It’s not just bikeriders at risk. It’s also pedestrians. And even other vehicles (r“l there’s been plenty accidents). Lower speed limits and radar enforcement would slow us all down by a couple of minutes. It would also save a potential fatality or heartbreak. The minimal ”sacrifice” is well worth it.
do the right thing
The pedestrian always has the right of way. If someone is in the crosswalk you must let them go, no matter how late you are for work or whatever else you are rushing to. The only way to avoid these situations is to teach drivers to never violate this rule and to teach kids bike safety.
To Infuriated
From your comment to “a resident” it appears that you misunderstood their comment being don’t know the meaning of commended. It means praised. Not to be confused with condemned. Perhaps this will make you a little less infuriated
TO: (Wrongly) Infuriated
Yes, the driver should be thanked for stopping like a good citizen should.
When everybody else does wrong and only one does right, then even though it ‘should’ be a normal thing to do, it is considered righteousness.
