Pedestrian Struck while Crossing Eastern Parkway

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Just moments ago, at around 3:00pm, a pedestrian was struck while trying to cross Eastern Parkway and Kingston Avenue. A Hatzalah ambulance that was passing on their way to assist at another accident witnessed the incident and stopped to help.

More pictures in the Extended Article.

Turns out the victim was not Jewish and while giving the patient the emergency care, non Jewish passerbyers were over heard praising Hatzalah for arriving on scene as fast as they did.

Witnesses to the accident said that the car had the green light, and the driver told police he was traveling at around 35 miles an hour when the pedestrian just walked into the street, he added that he tried to avoid the pedestrian but was unsuccessful.

Hatzalah transported the victim to Kings County Hospital where he was treated for a leg, chest and arm injuries.

OMG! What is with all the accidents on Eastern Parkway. I think people need to actually WATCH as they cross the street. I see many times that people just cross, even on a red-light AND even with young children! How are the kids supposed to learn right from wrong if you don’t show them right?!

The walk signals are a disaster at that intersection because the service road walk signals don’t match those of the main road half the time. The service road has a red light for two cycles, while the main road has a red light for one cycle. Thus, there often is a walk signal for the service road, and a don’t walk signal for the main road. But because Eastern Parkway is a very wide road, it is very easy to look across the street, see the walk signal for the service road, and mistakenly think you have a walk signal for the main road. The City should change the walk signals and red lights to be in synchronization at all times. There’s little point to having the service road remain with a red light while the main road has a green light because often drivers anyway go right through the service road red light when they see the main road has a green light. They assume it is a broken light, or whatever, and just go – making the intersection even more dangerous for pedestrians crossing the service road.

The worst is the Bochurim who cross in middle of the block. There have been too many people injured this way. Just a few years ago I was personally involved in helping the family of a bochur who was hit by a garbage truck and almost didn’t make it! PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!

  • BE CAREFUL!!!

if hatzahla was on there way to a call they should have continued and called somone else to this one that meens that the person who called first had to wait 2 as long thats not fair

the hit-and-run that happened recently was not the pedestrians fault, he was crossing on a green and the car ran the red!

My husband was hit last Thursday on Eastern Parkway. He was hit by a hit and run driver who ran the red light. I agree that there is alot of irresponsible pedestrian traffic- but on the other hand people need not assume that just because someone was hit he deserved it. I’ve read that kids hit must have run into the street but in reality they were on the sidewalk and the driver was irresponsible. We need to find out ways to stop this madness!

Besides many things there are legal issues involved also here so its not black and white no pun intended. If indeed they stopped they had to!
I am sure hatzolo knows exactly what to do and am positive that members were already at the call and all is ok B’H
SO you can surely go back to your cooking or web browsing and rest assured that all is well.
    have a blessed day
    :)

the worst is the fool who’s wife (carying their infant ) said no she wont cross in the middle of the road. The husband crosses anyhow. His wife ( along with the stroler / child ) followed. What fools we are to place your lives on the line. Is this action not suicidal. I wonder if the rabonim Would declare all who die when crossing in the middlr of the raod would be considered suicide al-pi-din. Maby we would think twtice

sw – you do not know the NYS law that an emergency vehicle witnessing an accident MUST stop to render assistance. This includes private, volunteer and local services.
