New Shul Opens at Moscow’s International Airport

A new Synagogue opened at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport with the help of FJC Russia this Thursday. Up until now, Domodedovo, one of Russia’s largest airports, only had a multi-purpose ‘mediation’ space.

The new “synagogue-in-transit”, albeit small, is equipped with all the necessities for conducting prayer services. A short while ago it got its own Torah Scroll and a rabbi will begin working there soon.

“Many international airports all over the world have such prayer rooms for different religions, and we’re glad that Domodedovo, which hosts many daily flights, including the ones to Israel, will now have a synagogue,” said FJC Russia president Rabbi Alexander Boroda. “Until now, observant Jewish passengers had to pray by themselves in waiting halls – now they can gather together in the synagogue. Besides, waiting time can now be spent more effectively – one could sit in on a Torah lesson or just read and study in a comfortable environment.”

For now, the new synagogue will only be open on Mondays and Thursdays, but it is expected to soon begin working all days a week except Shabbat.
