Chanukah Glows in the Dark in London’s Buckhurst Hill

Holding their event on the last night of Chanukah following a busy week of other local events, Chabad of Buckhurst Hill, London, directed by Rabbi Odom and Henny Brandman, hosted a Public Menorah Lighting and Annual Family Chanukah Party.

This year’s theme was a Glow in the Dark party, featuring a 6 ft. high Lava Lamp Menorah, created by Chabad member Desmond Solomon together with newly-arrived Shlucha to Buckhurst Hill Bassie Sacks. The Lava Lamp Menorah boasted different colors in each branch, with internal glowing lights.

Chabad of Buckhurst Hill has traditionally created unique featured Menorahs for its events each Chanukah. In the past they have made a Pearl Menorah, Coin Menorah, Can Menorah, Recycled phones Menorah, Chocolate Menorah and probably their most famous to date was the Whisky Menorah – built containing 65 liters of single malt whisky. This year, the Lava Lamp Menorah, a bubbly, colorful and bright work of art, made in special custom made tubes, was something really spectacular.

Activities for the children and adults included: glow in the dark hamma bead dreidels, Chanukah mosaics, glow in the dark bowling, glow in the dark face painting, glow stick menorah races, guess the number of sweets in the jar, doughnut decorating with glow in the dark icing, and much more.

At the Public Menorah Lighting, Chairman of Buckhurst Hill Parish Council Cllr. Aniket Patel was the Guest of Honor. He lit the first candle, welcomed the crowd, and committed to helping ensure more public Menorahs in the district next year!

Following the public Menorah Lighting, the community was invited back to the Chabad Centre for the themed Glow in the Dark Party, special UV Blacks lights lit room, even the drinks were in highlighter glasses and activities kept everyone busy and entertained.

Rabbi Odom Brandman, director of the Buckhurst Hill Chabad Centre, said “Chanukah is such a happy time of year and it was amazing to see the community come out in great numbers to support these fantastic events as they do every year in growing numbers. Chanukah is a time to spread light, warmth and community spirit and these events go a long way in encouraging this spirit in people”.
