QUEENS, NY — One person carrying a gun in a bag was arrested on the St. John's Queens campus Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The man had a President Bush mask and an old-style single-shot .50-caliber rifle, according to law enforcement officials. No injuries were reported.

Police sources said the man is a student of Guyanese descent who lived in a campus dorm. Sources said the student takes medicines for psychiatric issues and that police were investigating whether he had gone off his meds.

There was once a Melamed (Cheder teacher) whom a well-to-do industrialist engaged to serve as the village resident tutor for a period of time. It so happened that during this same period the prosperous businessman built himself a magnificent mansion.

During the housewarming festivities all the household members found themselves, as can be expected, in highly festive and cheerful spirits. When the owner of the new home noticed that the visiting Melamed was quite caught up in the joyous festivities, he turned to him in surprise: “Why so much joy? After all, you are only here temporarily!”

The Melamed, who might have been of humble means but not of humble mind, quickly glanced back at the Bal-Habbos (owner/employer) and rejoined: “And you Sir? Do you think you're here forever? You too, are only here temporarily!”
Despite all the attention paid to security these days there is much that can be learned from Judaism concerning this vital topic.

Hundreds Attend Gala Dinner of Chabad of Greater Mercer County

PRINCTON, NJ [CHI] — On the evening of September 23rd, 2007, Chabad of Greater Mercer County held its Gala Community Dinner at the beautiful Princeton Westin Hotel in Forrestal Village.

This years honorees were William and Gail Bogner, David and Andrea Gaynor, Jeffrey and Robin Persky, and Clive and Teresa Samuels. Almost 300 individuals from the central New Jersey area turned out to pay tribute to the honorees and this elegant semiformal affair.

Nachum Luria's straw hat has seen better days as he travels, in his open jeep, in the heat to his etrog orchards on the outskirts of Kfar Chabad, Israel. His face shines as we come closer to the orchards, covered in black netting to protect the workers and fruit from the sun. But Luria says that we still have lots of other predators in the form of bugs, “that come to attack the delicate fruit.” Among his many tasks is finding a pesticide that will both protect the precious commodity from nature's pests and yet not damage the fruit.

Every night, multitudes of Crown Heights residents, plus our thousands of guests here for Yom Tov, come to rejoice in unity with true Ahavas Yisroel. On Chol Hamoed, thousands of Jews from other neighbourhoods, too, join in to enjoy the Simchas Yom Tov, which has become renowned throughout the greater New York area, making it a huge Kiddush Hashem.

Simchas Beis Hashoeva has always been very close to the Rebbe’s heart. Since the Rebbe started this tradition in 5741 (1980), he mentioned it in every Sicha that he spoke every night of Sukos – another tradition he started that year. He continued mentioning these celebrations in his Sukos Sichos every year until 5752 (1991), demanding that everyone, without exception, participate, and often he asked for reports about the Simcha Beis Hashoeva celebrations.
