The 24th annual Chamah benefit dinner took place at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Manhattan on Thursday evening, December 1st. Hundreds of honorable guests, friends of Chamah, and benefactors attended the triumphant celebration.

First, spritz the kitchen’s stainless steel counters with disinfectant. Scrub vigorously. Next, wrap counters in tinfoil, tight, tight, tight. Now stretch plastic wrap over the foil and seal with masking tape. Then repeat for every surface that could possibly come into contact with food — yes, even the hanging pot rack.
I meet Mattew Shaer at Pete’s Candy Store in Williamsburg; Of course, this being Williamsburg, the bar serves no candy. Shaer walks in from the cold looking a little different than his picture. On Sunday, a still bearded Matisyahu appeared on the Reality TV Show “Chef Roble and Co” on the Bravo Channel, with his family and a few dozen friends – many from the Crown Heights Community. The show’s host, Chef Roble, was trying to prepare a Kosher meal for the Hassidic reggae-rapper and his guests before he went away for several months on tour this past summer. The name of the episode was “Babysitter in the Kitchen,” which referred to the mashgiach from OK Kosher certification agency.
When Rachel Jacobs first started cooking kosher at the University of Vermont, she encountered an uncommon problem. The university’s Sodexo employees approached her with too much reverence. “They would talk to me from just outside the door,” says Jacobs. “When I asked why, they said, ‘We’re not blessed.’ I had to tell them, ‘Everyone is blessed.’ It’s not about being Jewish, just about keeping the rules.”

CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — An apparent electrical fire broke out this morning in the ‘Tifferes Zekainim’ room of 770. Firefighters extinguished the fire within seconds, but remained on the scene to investigate after graffiti was discovered.
