PSA: Repair Shutdowns on 4/5 and Q Subway Lines

Brooklyn straphangers whose travels have been thrown into disarray by nighttime shutdowns of a key subway line this week are in for longer-term pain as another line shuts on weekends stretching through next month.

The Q is not running in both directions between Prospect Park and 57th St. in Manhattan on weekends starting last week and through the end of February so the MTA can replace tracks at Atlantic Ave., agency officials said.

The 4/5/6 line, meanwhile, has been closed from Atlantic Ave. to Grand Central from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. every night this week for some 300 mainetenance tasks, in an experimental night-time shutdown program designed to avoid exactly those kinds of interminable weekend service changes. The program, called “Fastrack,” closed platforms at three stations – Atlantic Ave.; Nevins St.; and Borough Hall) in Brooklyn.
