Hundreds Without Power In Brooklyn, More Asked To Cut Back

BROOKLYN, NY [NY1] — As of Sunday evening, Consolidated Edison was still working to restore power to hundreds of Brooklyn residents, while thousands more were forced to sweat through another summer scorcher without any air conditioning after the utility asked them to cut back on non-essential electrical appliances.

Con Ed officials asked about 90,000 customers in Sunset Park, Bay Ridge, Borough Park and Park Slope Sunday morning to stop using any non-essential electrical appliances – including air conditioners – until all power problems can be fixed.

At 5 p.m., about 700 customers in the area were still without power, down from nearly 2,000 Sunday morning.

The utility expects most electricity to be restored by Sunday night, with the remainder being restored early Monday morning.

The utility said it has reduced voltage by eight percent in the area while workers make repairs.

“Many times the heat, as it builds up underneath the ground, will often cause pieces of electrical equipment to fail,” said Michael Clendenin of Con Ed. “We had really three major power lines serving this part of Brooklyn go out overnight. We have been working to restore them and we have a couple of those lines already. We’re working to restore the other feeder that’s still out.”

Meanwhile, the utility asked customers who live in the affected area to reduce all power usage.

Con Ed also handed out dry ice to customers throughout the day to help keep their food cold.

Dry ice will be distributed at the following locations through 8 p.m.:
41st Street and 10th Avenue in Borough Park

3rd Avenue between 48th and 49th Streets in Sunset Park

44th Street and 7th Avenue in Sunset Park

The utility may continue to hand out dry ice Monday morning.

Con Ed says if you have any service problems, you should call the customer service hotline at 1-800-75-CON-ED.
