Supreme Court Upholds Obamacare Subsidies

People who buy health insurance through state exchanges established by the federal government will remain eligible for subsidies, the Supreme Court ruled Thursday.

The 6-3 decision is a victory for the Obama administration and closes the book on what might be the last significant legal challenge to the 2010 health care law.

The question before the court in King v. Burwell was whether federal subsidies to purchase insurance can flow through state health insurance exchanges created by the federal government.

Chief Justice John Roberts authored the majority opinion, representing Justices Kennedy, Ginsburg, Breyer, Sotomayor, and Kagan.

Although, I am not a fan of Obama care or Obama, I think that this will be good news to many in the frum community. I know of quite a few families who have medical coverage at little or no cost, thanks to Obama care.

It has no impact at all on the frum community. Most states where the frum community lives have exchanges, so the subsidies they get are legal.

Words no longer have meaning. If an exchange not established by a state is now “established by a state”, then anything can mean anything, and we are no longer a nation of laws. This is a dark day in American jurisprudence.

Att number #1. Let us not forget how this bill adversely affects the firm community. Those who are on social security, medicare, medicade and so forth have seen their benefits and coverage reduced owing to the increased costs of Obama care– much of the money going for administrative costs and to benefits for illegal aliens. Many have seen covered medicare services eliminated because of this. And, do not forget
recent history with hackers, the federal website remains still unsafe exposing one to massive criminal and medical fraud. With the federal government, there is never something for nothing!

  • It's about time

The Rambam says that just because someone
is wrong on some things, this does not mean
he is wrong on everything. Rebuke for the wrong, commendation for what’s right.

For a long time, I was wondering. If you were are just a cent above the eligibility limit for free insurance, then the best you could do, for a one person policy, was some $300/month. Not $50, $70, $100, but $300 at best. Finally, it happened that we now have plans that give us more flexibility and affordability.

On the other hand, I’m afraid that they will approve
the same-sex lifestyle, scheduled for a vote this week. If, CH”V, this happens, G-d have mercy on us all. You know (I don’t know if this has been confirmed), but there is talk out there that organizations that don’t go along with this (e.g. religious organizations, schools, etc.) could lose their non-profit status. Worse yet, if Moshiach does not come first, are we in for some tumultous times?

  • A question for Milhouse

Is not the health care program saving Jewish lives since the life span of insured people is higher than uninsured. Doesn’t that mean that Obama lengthens the life span of yiden?

    • Milhouse

FIrst of all, the lifespan of insured people is not longer than that of uninsured people.

Second, even if it were so, the subsidies in states that dont’ have exchanges are blatantly against the law. The language in the statute is clear, and the majority just ignored it.

Even if this saved lives it would still be wrong. A court has no right to save lives by falsifying the law. The Torah says judges must not favor the poor. If rendering an honest judgment means someone will die, better they die than that the law be corrupted. That’s what we learn from the story of Shimon ben Shetach’s son.

  • A question for Milhouse

say that again? your first sen sentence is a lie and people like you in effect have jews go to their deaths early. not having medical care leads to illness and early death and for you to infer otherwise is ridiculous.

    • Milhouse

Sigh. This is my third attempt at posting this; I don’t know what happened to the first two.

There is no conclusive evidence that health insurance increases a person’s lifespan.

  • A question for Milhouse

Dear folks, going to a doctor does not lengthen your life span.” -Milhouse

    • Milhouse

Health insurance is not health care. They are two completely different things.

  • the facts are

Please read #3 and understand it. This is/was a sad day for America.
#1 & #5, the reality is, most plans went and will be going up in price. many frum lost the plans that they liked because they could not “keep their plan”. many frum actually PAY for insurance.
Prices again will be skyrocketing in Jan.
The business mandate will now kick-in in Jan. How many will lose their jobs? work hours?
