Marchers Rally in Crown Heights Against Gun Violence

Dozens of people rallied in Crown Heights yesterday, Thursday, in a call to end gun violence, following the death of an aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo who was caught in a crossfire during a not-unusually violent Labor Day.

The crowd marched along Eastern Parkway and prayed in memory of shooting victims.

The rally was held a day after Carey Gabay, 43, a Harvard-educated personal aide to Governor Andrew Cuomo, died of his gunshot wound.

He was shot in the head during a predawn party celebrating the West Indian Parade on Labor Day, in what is believed to be stray fire.

Police are still searching for his killer.

What is the purpose of such demonstrations? Do they really think the criminal element is unaware that most people disapprove of their activities, and care enough about such disapproval to change their ways now that they know?!

Also, if you’re going to demonstrate against violence, thinking it will have some effect, why target just one kind? Why is violence done with guns so much worse than that done by other means? If Mr Gabay had been stabbed or strangled or pushed into traffic he’d be just as dead. So why not just march against all violence, for all the good it will do?

    • Ouch

When something hurts you say “ouch,” whether it helps or not. As Governor Cuomo said, it hurts.

    • Milhouse

Saying ouch is spontaneous. Marching is not. It’s planned in advance and done for a purpose, and that purpose is not benign.

it’s too bring awareness to those who allow the parade to happen, and try to convince them to either stop the parade or take it elsewhere.
It’s not the locals who are attending. No locals care for it here.

Anonymous, the march was not against the parade. Few or none of the marchers want the parade to stop.

the point is: every year they have the parade and every year there is violence that is associated with that parade; granted that this parade could be a great thing for the neighborhood, but it seems that every year it becomes a one day crime spree that no one wants or can tolerate

  • People should march and cry out!

This has been going on since Caine! People should speak up and march. People should of have marched before WW2! Silence in the face of atrocities is cowardness.

    Remember Bereshit:

Then Hashem said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” And he said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” 1He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to Me from the ground.…

    Torah is always correct!

    • Milhouse

The Torah does not say anything about marching. The purpose of marching is to demonstrate that many people support a particular view and demand some particular thing. What are they demanding? That the criminals do teshuvah?! Do they imagine that the criminals only do what they do because they’re unaware that people disapprove of it, and when they find out they will stop?! You know very well that they don’t imagine that, and that is not their purpose. You know what their purpose is, and should not support it.

they should rage on their own leaders, ministers etc. IF THEIR OWN RELIGIOUS LEADERS WOULD WORK ON THIS, THE PEOPLE MIGHT HAVE A CHANCE. This happened only because they don’t have proper leadership in the black community in many of their places of worship.
there are some who are appropriate, but many just teach hate and whatever their agenda is. Sorry about this. Nobody wins

  • parade of death

    why don’t black lives matter?
this “parade” is only about politicians & money, if black lives mattered this would have ended years ago.

So, Milhouse, what is the political goal? Seems to me, the march is an effort to communicate to the media that there are some in the AA community who are outraged at gun violence. Where’s the agenda?

    • Milhouse

There’s the key word “outraged at gun violence”. What’s special about “gun violence” as opposed to any other kind? They’re not marching against the parade, or against criminals, they’re not asking for more and tougher policing against the criminal element. They’re marching for even more draconian restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms. They’re marching to advance Cuomo’s anti-gun agenda. They’re marching against the Bill of Rights that protects us all.

  • Where was PETA?

Is a chicken’s life more important that the life of a child killed by stray bullets or a man killed over drug turf?
