A night of fireworks and shootings, a typical 4th of July in New York City.

The booms and explosions that have characterized New York City for the last few weeks continued into the 4th of July, perhaps the only day that such fireworks spectacles would have been considered normal just a few months ago.

Along with the fireworks also came the shootings, which have sadly also become normal over the past few weeks.

Forty one people were shot overnight last night, a staggering number even for the big apple, which has seen an alarming spike in gun violence since Black Lives Matter protests turned violent, and calls to defund the police were taken up by politicians.

“Forty one people were shot in NYC last night. FORTY ONE,” wrote NYC Councilman Chaim Deutsch. “As I said when I voted NO on the budget: violent crime is skyrocketing in NYC. This isn’t the time to defund the NYPD.”

Just last week, New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio announced his plan to slash the NYPD’s budget by $1 Billion, moving the funds to other departments. The measure was passed by the City Council with an overwhelming majority.
