Police Shoot Armed Suspect After Car Chase

An armed suspect fleeing from police officers was shot and wounded at around 12:30pm today on Montgomery Street between Kingston and Brooklyn Avenues in the heart of Crown Heights.

Sources told CrownHeights.info that the incident began as a car chase, with police officers pursuing a vehicle down Empire Blvd. from Flatbush Avenue eastward towards Crown Heights. It is yet unclear what events led to the chase.

When the suspect encountered traffic as he neared the intersection of Brooklyn Avenue, he swerved into oncoming traffic, swiping a delivery truck and colliding head-on with an MTA bus.

The suspect then exited his vehicle and fled on foot up Brooklyn Avenue, then turned right onto Montgomery Street towards Kingston Ave., with police in hot pursuit.

Noticing that the suspect had a gun on him, police opened fire and wounded him. Bystanders told CrownHeights.info that they heard at least two gunshots, though the suspect was only hit once. It is still unclear whether the suspect fired his gun at all, or how many shots in total were fired by police.

The suspect was arrested and taken into custody, while being treated by EMS for his injuries. His gun was recovered at his side.

The suspect is described as an African-American male in his late 20s.

Police have shut down several streets in the vicinity while the investigation is ongoing, leading to heavy traffic congestion in the area.

Update 3:30pm:

In a press briefing Chief Carlos Gomez, the NYPD Chief of Patrol, detailed the events leading up to police shooting a suspect on Montgomery Street in Crown Heights.

The incident began at around 12:00pm on Flatbush Avenue and Empire Boulevard when a 71st precinct police officer assigned to summonses duty observed a motorist driving a white Ford Mustang at a very high rate of speed and weaving in and out of traffic.

The officer began following the car and when they reached Empire and Nostrand he activated his emergency lights and siren in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The driver immediately began fleeing.

When they reached the intersection of Empire and Brooklyn Avenue the fleeing motorist encountered traffic which he attempted to bypass and instead crashed into a parked delivery truck.

The suspect then exited his vehicle with a firearm in his hand and began fleeing on foot up Brooklyn Avenue, then making a right on Montgomery Street. The suspect then lost his footing, fell to the ground and dropped the firearm.

Just a few feet away, the officer ordered the suspect at gunpoint not to reach for the gun, an order which he ignored and the officer shot at the suspect twice and striking him once in the abdomen.

Police said that the suspect is a 22 year old black man who has over 15 priors including charges for gun possession and manslaughter. His name has not been released pending the investigation.

Chief Gomez said that “the officer did an admiral job and utilized good tactics. He added that he personally visited the officer in the hospital and congratulated him for a good job.

They (NYPD etc…) should use these situations and situations like this to practice getting traffic flowing.

Anytime a street is blocked or even Public school dismissal happens, this neighborhood is on a stand still. This is crazy and unacceptable!!!

This is a free training opportunity, they should take advantage of it.

In general, Crown Heights traffic is getting worse and worse. Any delay (shooting, car accident, construction etc…etc…) brings this neighborhood to a total stand still.

Too many cars, too little space for them, there is no way to get traffic flowing.
      Solution? Walk more, drive less.

  • King David reassures us

  • Security

And you think WE are in danger in Israel? Get out fast, Crown Heights is a dangerous place.

    • Really?

In Israel pple are trying to kill you b/c you are a Jew
Here no-one was trying to kill a Jew
      You make no sense

I agree. What did he get for manslaughter? Some turkey and free dental care? Then they let him out, pay for his S8 apartment, and now compensation for being shot.
He should be locked up at least one year for each time he committed a crime. 1 year for the first crime, plus 2 years for the 2nd crime = 3 years. Plus another 3 years for the 3rd crime = 6 years.
For 15 crimes he’ll be dead before he ever gets out!
We don’t need people like him on the loose.

    • yup

he is 24 but i 100% agree with you. also why was he out on the streets.. he was arrested for manslaughter and illegal arms possession

To number 6 sad and unfortunately there are one to many people like you around here that have no trust in the Rebbe .. This does not mean there will be no issues in our neighborhood ..

  • he didn't trip

he didn’t trip. what did he trip on??? the police are so over dramatizing it. blocking off 3 full streets for 6 hours. a little to much.

  • Uncle Mendel

What Police Brutality ! What gives them the right to shoot that upstanding citizen? Perhaps he was on a mission of mercy. trying to help someone get to the dialysis center, or something like that. 15 prior arrests do not a criminal make.
    Another example of Racial Profiling!

  • Silver lining

The only good thing these stupid traffic patterns brought was an effective roadblock for the fleeing suspect. Yay!

  • He survived?

Unfortunately he survived, now tax payers have to support him in jail and then on public assistance when he gets out. I am sure the same judge that lets all the cop killers out, will just give him a slap on the wrist. Shameful justice system.
