Rabbonim Of Melbourne Publish Halachic Ruling Regarding Coronavirus As Virus Hits Community

The Chabad community of Melbourne became part of the growing coronavirus pandemic this week, after a teacher returning from the United States was diagnosed with the virus.

In an effort to stem the spread of the viral infection, both Yeshiva College and Beth Rivkah Schools canceled classes, and the Rabbonim published a clear Psak Halacha regarding the virus.

The rabbonim ruled that anyone infected or who was in direct contact with an infected person, may not attend minyon, go to mikvah, or do anything that might place others at risk.

They also encouraged common sense measures including not kissing the torah, or spitting during Aleinu.

The best defense against the virus continues to be simple hand washing with soap, according to the CDC. Simple home hand sanitizer  is also effective in killing the virus.

To date, over a hundred thousand people have been infected globally, with many thousands dying of the COVID-19 virus.

Those at highest risk are the elderly and those with preexisting medical conditions, while the young and healthy are at very low risk of the virus, mostly showing only minimal symptoms before returning to normal health.
