Petition To Reinstate Community Hebrew After School Programs In Miami-Dade

Since 2008, Chabad Chayil has been caring for the children of Miami Dade County, during after-school hours, through the highly acclaimed Community Hebrew After School Program (CHAP). CHAP has consistently received excellent ratings from every accrediting agency, and most importantly, by the children and families.

Just one business day before the 2019-20 school year began, Chabad Chayil was abruptly notified that it could no longer use Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) facilities — as it has for more than a decade — because of a report by the Office of the Inspector General — a report whose fact-finding phase ignored readily available information. Chabad Chayil carefully read the libelous and defamatory investigative draft report and answered each of its concerns (see ChabadChayil.org/Crisis).

We, the undersigned, plead that you reopen CHAP, enabling the hundreds of children who were registered at the start of this school year to receive urgently-needed services, lessons, and care.

CHAP remains committed to resolve all concerns to the satisfaction of all parties involved. We ask only that you give the children and parents who depend upon CHAP their after-school program.

While there are many other faith-based programs operating on public school grounds after school, Chabad Chayil provides the ONLY daily after-school program that teaches the Hebrew language and addresses Jewish culture. Many of the children CHAP services have special needs and have been turned away from every other local after-care program. How ironic — and how unfortunate for these children, who need the extra care more than anyone — that the only program that welcomed them is being shut down, by those entrusted to care for children.

We are parents. We are students. We are teachers. We are concerned local citizens. We cherish CHAP and we ask that you reopen this beloved community institution.
