The Valmadonna Trust Library, Collected by Jack V. Lunzer, is named after Valmadonna, a small town near Alessandria in north-west Italy with longstanding connections to the Lunzer family. The collection encompasses works from throughout the world, particularly Italy, “the cradle of Hebrew printing”, and covers over a millennium; many items in the collection are rare or unique, and many date back to the earliest Hebrew printings.

The library had been on auction previously at Sothbey’s as a entire collection, but is now being sold separately at auction. The present auction is set for Thursday, the 15th of November, 2018 at 1:00pm.

This auction will feature a selection of 130 fine Hebrew Printed Books, all spectacularly bound, including six Incunabula, an 18th century miniature prayer-book printed entirely on vellum and an extraordinary 700-page manuscript festival Machzor from Ferrara dated 1469 which had previously been exhibited in 1989 at the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York.

Part of the auction will feature a copy of Maggid Devarav LeYa’akov – Likutei Amarim, First Printed Edition, Koretz, 1781 from R. Dov-Ber, the Maggid of Mehzeritch.
